Antioxidant activities of polyphenols extracted from Perilla frutescens varieties [PDF]

open access: yes, 2008
Various cultivars of Perilla frutescens (L.) (var. crispa and var. frutescens) Britt. were harvested in China and Japan. They were easily differentiated on the basis of their foliage color, that varied from red to green.

Cell wall target fragment discovery using a low‐cost, minimal fragment library

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
LoCoFrag100 is a fragment library made up of 100 different compounds. Similarity between the fragments is minimized and 10 different fragments are mixed into a single cocktail, which is soaked to protein crystals. These crystals are analysed by X‐ray crystallography, revealing the binding modes of the bound fragment ligands.

Determination of moisture content and water activity in algae and fish by thermoanalytical techniques

open access: yesQuímica Nova, 2008
The water content in seafoods is very important since it affects their sensorial quality, microbiological stability, physical characteristics and shelf life. In this study, thermoanalytical techniques were employed to develop a simple and accurate method

Four of the States of Matter [PDF]

open access: yes, 2008
This kinesthetic science activity reintroduces participants to three states of matter (solid, liquid, gas), and introduces them to a fourth state of matter, plasma, and its connection to the Sun.

The Great Water Hook-up [PDF]

open access: yes
In this activity students assume the role of water system designers. They have been asked to go to a small town to design a new public water supply system. They must decide how to link all the homes and businesses to the water source so that everyone can

Green synthesis of highly functionalized octahydropyrrolo[3,4-c]pyrrole derivatives using subcritical water, and their anti(myco)bacterial and antifungal activity [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
A series of novel 2-(thiazol-2-yl)-octahydropyrrolo[3,4-c]pyrroles was synthesized by reaction of octahydropyrrolo[3,4-c]pyrrole N-benzoylthiourea derivatives and α-haloketones in subcritical water at 130 °C in 75-91% yield.

The (Glg)ABCs of cyanobacteria: modelling of glycogen synthesis and functional divergence of glycogen synthases in Synechocystis sp. PCC 6803

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We reconstituted Synechocystis glycogen synthesis in vitro from purified enzymes and showed that two GlgA isoenzymes produce glycogen with different architectures: GlgA1 yields denser, highly branched glycogen, whereas GlgA2 synthesizes longer, less‐branched chains.

Organ‐specific redox imbalances in spinal muscular atrophy mice are partially rescued by SMN antisense oligonucleotides

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We identified a systemic, progressive loss of protein S‐glutathionylation—detected by nonreducing western blotting—alongside dysregulation of glutathione‐cycle enzymes in both neuronal and peripheral tissues of Taiwanese SMA mice. These alterations were partially rescued by SMN antisense oligonucleotide therapy, revealing persistent redox imbalance as ...

Bunsen section thermodynamic model for hydrogen production by the sulfur-Iodine cycle [PDF]

open access: yes, 2009
A model for the Bunsen section of the Sulfur – Iodine thermo-chemical cycle is proposed, where sulfur dioxide reacts with excess water and iodine to produce two demixing liquid aqueous phases (H2SO4 rich and HI rich) in equilibrium.

Tau acetylation at K331 has limited impact on tau pathology in vivo

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We mapped tau post‐translational modifications in humanized MAPT knock‐in mice and in amyloid‐bearing double knock‐in mice. Acetylation within the repeat domain, particularly around K331, showed modest increases under amyloid pathology. To test functional relevance, we generated MAPTK331Q knock‐in mice.
