On the Physics of Size Selectivity

open access: yes, 2005
We demonstrate that two mechanisms used by biological ion channels to select particles by size are driven by entropy. With uncharged particles in an infinite cylinder, we show that a channel that attracts particles is small-particle selective and that a ...

Nitrogen front evolution in purged polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cell with dead-ended anode [PDF]

open access: yes, 2010
In this paper, we model and experimentally verify the evolution of liquid water and nitrogen fronts along the length of the anode channel in a proton exchange membrane fuel cell operating with a dead-ended anode that is fed by dry hydrogen.

Glycosylated LGALS3BP is highly secreted by bladder cancer cells and represents a novel urinary disease biomarker

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Urinary LGALS3BP is elevated in bladder cancer patients compared to healthy controls as detected by the 1959 antibody–based ELISA. The antibody shows enhanced reactivity to the high‐mannose glycosylated variant secreted by cancer cells treated with kifunensine (KIF).

Survivin and Aurora Kinase A control cell fate decisions during mitosis

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Aurora A interacts with survivin during mitosis and regulates its centromeric role. Loss of Aurora A activity mislocalises survivin, the CPC and BubR1, leading to disruption of the spindle checkpoint and triggering premature mitotic exit, which we refer to as ‘mitotic slippage’.

Self-organised droplet flow patterns in microchannels [PDF]

open access: yes, 2009
This paper was presented at the 2nd Micro and Nano Flows Conference (MNF2009), which was held at Brunel University, West London, UK. The conference was organised by Brunel University and supported by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, IPEM, the ...

A guide to reactive oxygen species in tumour hypoxia: measurement and therapeutic implications

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Hypoxia reshapes tumour redox landscapes by altering compartmental ROS production (mitochondria, NOX, ER, peroxisomes). Accurate interpretation requires oxygen‐contextualised measurement (live biosensors, chemical probes, EPR, LC–MS) and awareness of artefacts (reoxygenation, probe specificity).

Expression and localization of Aquaporin 1a in the sea-bass (Dicentrarchus labrax) during ontogeny

open access: yesFrontiers in Physiology, 2011
The successful establishment of a species in a given habitat depends on the ability of each of its developing stages to adapt to the environment. In order to understand this process we have studied the adaptation of a euryhaline fish, the sea-bass ...

Dual targeting of RET and SRC synergizes in RET fusion‐positive cancer cells

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Despite the strong activity of selective RET tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKIs), resistance of RET fusion‐positive (RET+) lung cancer and thyroid cancer frequently occurs and is mainly driven by RET‐independent bypass mechanisms. Son et al. show that SRC TKIs significantly inhibit PAK and AKT survival signaling and enhance the efficacy of RET TKIs in ...

Optimal Transmit Covariance for Ergodic MIMO Channels [PDF]

open access: yes, 2005
In this paper we consider the computation of channel capacity for ergodic multiple-input multiple-output channels with additive white Gaussian noise. Two scenarios are considered.

Microfluidic electro‐viscoelastic manipulation of extracellular vesicles

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
The electro‐viscoelastic manipulation as a potential method for separation of particles based on size. The particles introduced as a sheath flow migrate to the channel center under the influence of simultaneously applied electric field and pressure driven flow.
