Response of directly seeded high-value timber species to microorganisms, fertiliser and a water retention polymer: implications for reforestation of agricultural lands in Southeast Asia [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Forest Science, 2016
High-value native timber species are being promoted in reforestation in Southeast Asia. However, slow growth during early establishment, coupled with poor soil fertility, poses challenges for promoting tree planting programs. Field trials were undertaken on agroforestry land in Thailand to examine the efficacy of reforestation treatments.

Aggressive prostate cancer is associated with pericyte dysfunction

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Tumor‐produced TGF‐β drives pericyte dysfunction in prostate cancer. This dysfunction is characterized by downregulation of some canonical pericyte markers (i.e., DES, CSPG4, and ACTA2) while maintaining the expression of others (i.e., PDGFRB, NOTCH3, and RGS5).

Sequential biological and photocatalysis based treatments for shipboard slop purification: A pilot plant investigation [PDF]

open access: yes, 2019
This study investigated the treatment of a shipboard slop containing commercial gasoline in a pilot plant scale consisting of a membrane biological reactor (MBR) and photocatalytic reactor (PCR) acting in series. The MBR contributed for approximately 70%

Survivin and Aurora Kinase A control cell fate decisions during mitosis

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Aurora A interacts with survivin during mitosis and regulates its centromeric role. Loss of Aurora A activity mislocalises survivin, the CPC and BubR1, leading to disruption of the spindle checkpoint and triggering premature mitotic exit, which we refer to as ‘mitotic slippage’.

The preparation and characterization of alumina membranes with ultra-fine pores : Part 4. Ultrafiltration and hyperfiltration experiments [PDF]

open access: yes, 1985
The rejection characteristics of three types of alumina membranes for polyethylene glycol (PEG) polymers and dextrans soluted in water have been investigated. If the temperature at which the membranes are treated is increased, the pore size increases and

CDK11 inhibition induces cytoplasmic p21WAF1 splice variant by p53 stabilisation and SF3B1 inactivation

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
CDK11 inhibition stabilises the tumour suppressor p53 and triggers the production of an alternative p21WAF1 splice variant p21L, through the inactivation of the spliceosomal protein SF3B1. Unlike the canonical p21WAF1 protein, p21L is localised in the cytoplasm and has reduced cell cycle‐blocking activity.

Study on Effect of Particle Size Distribution on Water-Retention Capacity of Coral Sand from Macro and Micro Perspective

open access: yesJournal of Marine Science and Engineering
The reclamation coral sand (CS) layer is the survival environment for island reef vegetation in the South China Sea. The root system within the CS bed draws water necessary for vegetation growth, implying that the water-retention capacity of CS plays a ...

Testing the shape-similarity hypothesis between particle-size distribution and water retention for Sicilian soils

open access: yesJournal of Agricultural Engineering, 2012
Application of the Arya and Paris (AP) model to estimate the soil water retention curve requires a detailed description of the particlesize distribution (PSD) but limited experimental PSD data are generally determined by the conventional sieve-hydrometer

Influence of Mechanical Yielding on Predictions of Saturation: The Saturation Line [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
It is now well accepted that the mechanical and the water retention behaviour of a soil under unsaturated conditions are coupled and, that such coupling, should be incorporated into a constitutive model for a realistic representation of soil’s response ...

Estimation of the hydraulic parameters of unsaturated samples by electrical resistivity tomography [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
In situ and laboratory experiments have shown that electrical resistivity tomography (ERT) is an effective tool to image transient phenomena in soils. However, its application in quantifying soil hydraulic parameters has been limited.
