Pre‐analytical optimization of cell‐free DNA and extracellular vesicle‐derived DNA for mutation detection in liquid biopsies

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Pre‐analytical handling critically determines liquid biopsy performance. This study defines practical best‐practice conditions for cell‐free DNA (cfDNA) and extracellular vesicle–derived DNA (evDNA), showing how processing time, storage conditions, tube type, and plasma input volume affect DNA integrity and mutation detection.

A precipitation recycling network to assess freshwater vulnerability : challenging the watershed convention [PDF]

open access: yes, 2019
Water resources and water scarcity are usually regarded as local aspects for which a watershed-based management appears adequate. However, precipitation, as a main source of freshwater, may depend on moisture supplied through land evaporation from ...

Globalization of Freshwater Resources: Innovative Management Strategy

open access: yesForesight and STI Governance, 2010
The population of the world has grown substantially during the last half a century, and the demand for water amounted to one third of contemporary volume. The paper investigates the issue of water shortage which increases more rapidly than it was ...

Salinity impacts on irrigation water-scarcity in food bowl regions of the US and Australia

open access: yesEnvironmental Research Letters, 2022
Irrigation water use and crop production may be severely limited by both water shortages and increased salinity levels. However, impacts of crop-specific salinity limitations on irrigation water scarcity are largely unknown.

Establishment of a humanized patient‐derived xenograft mouse model of high‐grade serous ovarian cancer for preclinical evaluation of combination immunotherapy

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
We have established a humanized orthotopic patient‐derived xenograft (Hu‐oPDX) mouse model of high‐grade serous ovarian cancer (HGSOC) that recapitulates human tumor–immune interactions. Using combined anti‐PD‐L1/anti‐CD73 immunotherapy, we demonstrate the model's improved biological relevance and enhanced translational value for preclinical ...

Water scarcity assessment index from the realistic perspective of human basic water requirements

open access: yesEnvironmental and Sustainability Indicators
Significant population growth with rapid economic development have led to water scarcity problems around the world. Currently, most of the simple water scarcity assessment methods only refer to per capita water use, failing to take into account actual ...

Water depletion: An improved metric for incorporating seasonal and dry-year water scarcity into water risk assessments

open access: yesElementa: Science of the Anthropocene, 2016
We present an improved water-scarcity metric we call water depletion, calculated as the fraction of renewable water consumptively used for human activities. We employ new data from the WaterGAP3 integrated global water resources model to illustrate water

Sensitivity of water scarcity events to ENSO-driven climate variability at the global scale [PDF]

open access: yesHydrology and Earth System Sciences, 2015
Globally, freshwater shortage is one of the most dangerous risks for society. Changing hydro-climatic and socioeconomic conditions have aggravated water scarcity over the past decades.

Evolutionarily divergent DUF4465 domains have a common vitamin B12‐binding function

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
We show that DUF4465 family proteins, widespread across bacteria from gut microbiomes, hydrothermal vents, and soil, share a common vitamin B12‐binding function. These augmented β‐jellyroll proteins bind vitamin B12 via extended loops. Our findings establish sequence‐diverse DUF4465 proteins as a widespread class of B12‐binding proteins, highlighting ...

Systemic dysregulation of apolipoproteins in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis serum

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a fatal disease that damages motor neurons. This study found that people with ALS show significant changes in blood fats and the proteins that carry them. Several apolipoproteins were higher, lipid balances were altered, and normal protein–lipid relationships were disrupted.
