Transcriptional analysis in multiple barley varieties identifies signatures of waterlogging response

open access: yesPlant Direct, 2023
Waterlogging leads to major crop losses globally, particularly for waterlogging‐sensitive crops such as barley. Waterlogging reduces oxygen availability and results in additional stresses, leading to the activation of hypoxia and stress response pathways

Protected and productive: How greenhouses should deliver UK food security

open access: yesPLANTS, PEOPLE, PLANET, EarlyView.
The United Kingdom produces less than 20% of its fruit and ~50% of its vegetables, leaving it highly import dependent and vulnerable to supply chain disruptions. Our study maps 2085 ha of existing greenhouses, over 70% more than 40 years old, and identifies where modern infrastructure could expand production.

Genetic factors increasing barley grain yields under soil waterlogging

open access: yesFood and Energy Security, 2020
In‐crop soil waterlogging can be caused by extreme rainfall events, high ground water tables, excessive irrigation, lateral ground water flow, either individually or in concert, and together these factors inhibit potential grain yields.

Plant response to combined salinity and waterlogging stress: Current research progress and future prospects

open access: yesPlant Stress, 2023
Salinity and waterlogging stresses have catastrophic effects on plants. Physiological and molecular mechanisms of plant responses to individual salinity and waterlogging stresses have been widely investigated. Several research studies have been conducted

The effect of soil moisture content on leaf extension rate and yield of perennial ryegrass [PDF]

open access: yes, 2009
peer-reviewedThree experiments are described that were designed to evaluate the relationship between soil moisture and perennial ryegrass growth and leaf extension rate (LER) in loam or silt clay loam soil.

Potential drivers of fast growth in Paulownia

open access: yesPLANTS, PEOPLE, PLANET, EarlyView.
Trees in the genus Paulownia play a crucial role in sustainable forestry, rural economic development, and carbon mitigation due to their rapid growth, exceptional hardwood properties, and prominent carbon sequestration capacity. This review highlights the societal value of Paulownia trees and synthesizes several potential drivers of extraordinarily ...

Responses to waterlogging and frost related to the topographic sequences of eucalypt species at three sites in central Tasmania [PDF]

open access: yes, 1998
The boundaries between the eucalypt species typical of flats and hollows and those typical of slopes have been commonly attributed to variable waterlogging and/or frost resistance.

Towards Holistic Braided River Management: The Interface of Geomorphology, Hydrology, Ecology and Economics

open access: yesRiver Research and Applications, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Braided rivers are some of the most dynamic and complex river systems in the world. They provide unique habitat to rare species, supply natural resources, and act as a source of groundwater recharge. However, they can also pose significant flooding and erosion hazards. Current management of braided rivers in Aotearoa New Zealand faces a strong
