On the conservation of calcium wave speeds
Cell Calcium, 1998Most long distance calcium signals are believed to take the form of actively propagated calcium waves. In 1991, when this proposal was first advanced, all such waves were thought to belong to one class, for which fertilization waves were the prototype.

Determination of wave speed and wave separation in the arteries
Journal of Biomechanics, 2001Considering waves in the arteries as infinitesimal wave fronts rather than sinusoidal wavetrains, the change in pressure across the wave front, dP, is related to the change in velocity, dU, that it induces by the "water hammer" equation, dP=+/-rhocdU, where rho is the density of blood and c is the local wave speed.

Left ventricular (LV) wave speed (LVWS) was studied experimentally and confirmed in theory. Combining the definition of elastance (E) with the equations for the conservation of mass and momentum shows that LVWS is proportional to the square root of E LA, where L is long-axis length and A is the cross-sectional area, and the density of the blood.

Spreading speeds as slowest wave speeds for cooperative systems
Mathematical Biosciences, 2005It is well known that in many scalar models for the spread of a fitter phenotype or species into the territory of a less fit one, the asymptotic spreading speed can be characterized as the lowest speed of a suitable family of traveling waves of the model. Despite a general belief that multi-species (vector) models have the same property, we are unaware

RAYLEIGH1 was not quite satisfied in having to obtain his equation for speed of wave energy by indirect means, from consideration of 'interference groups'and 'variation in wave-length', and he searched for an alternative method; but the one he devised was also indirect, so that his result still rested on mathematical hypothesis, and was devoid of any ...

Abstract In this paper, we determine the ignition wave speed and the extinction wave speed for a reaction function which was obtained by centre-manifold reduction and is relevant to combustion. Our numerical calculations cover the entire relevant δ range for three choices of ∊.

Experimental evaluation of local wave speed in the presence of reflected waves
Journal of Biomechanics, 2014Wave speed (also called pulse wave velocity) is the speed by which disturbance travels along the medium and it depends on the mechanical and geometrical properties of the vessel and on the density of the blood. Wave speed is a parameter of clinical relevance because it is an indicator of arterial stiffness and cardiovascular diseases.

Standing waves and the influence of speed limits
2001 European Control Conference (ECC), 2001Traffic dependent speed limits have improved the security of highway traffic considerably. However, on highway sections controlled by variable speed limits large oscillations in speed can still be observed. On the basis of traffic data and a macroscopic traffic model, the influence of decentrally controlled speed limits on the states of highway traffic
