Biosynthesis of the β-diketones of barley spike epicuticular wax
Archives of Biochemistry and Biophysics, 1976Abstract [1-14C]acetate and [2-14C]acetate were incorporated into the β-diketones of barley spike epicuticular wax via the peduncle. Utilizing column chromatography with dry copper acetate, the β-diketones were isolated and the labeling pattern in the hentriacontan-14, 16-dione determined after its degradation.

Plant cuticles shine: advances in wax biosynthesis and export
Current Opinion in Plant Biology, 2009The plant cuticle is an extracellular lipid structure deposited over the aerial surfaces of land plants, which seals the shoot and protects it from biotic and abiotic stresses. It is composed of cutin polymer matrix and waxes, produced and secreted by epidermal cells.

MdKCS2 increased plant drought resistance by regulating wax biosynthesis
Plant Cell Reports, 2021We found that the apple wax related gene played a role in changing plant epidermal permeability and enhancing plant resistance to drought stress by increasing wax accumulation. The content and composition of epidermal wax in plants are affected by genetic and environmental factors.

Wax ester biosynthesis by midwater marine animals
Marine Biology, 1974Lipid is a major energy reserve in many aquatic animals, and wax esters are the principal type of lipid present in most pelagic marine invertebrates and teleost fishes from deep water or near-surface cold waters. It has been suggested that these wax esters are biosynthesized by only a few organisms, and are then transferred along the food web to the ...

Planta, 2007
The surface of plants is covered by cuticular wax, which contains a mixture of very long-chain fatty acid (VLCFA) derivatives. This wax surface provides a hydrophobic barrier which reduces non-stomatal water loss. One component of the cuticular wax is the alkyl esters, which typically contain a VLCFA esterified to an alcohol of a similar length.

Biosynthesis of wax in the honeybee, Apis mellifera L.
Insect Biochemistry, 1980Abstract The composition of the cuticular wax of the honeybee is quantitatively different from that of the comb wax. The major component of the cuticular lipids is hydrocarbon, which comprises 58% of this wax. In contrast, hydrocarbon comprises only 13–17% of the comb wax, and monoester is the largest component ( Tulloch 1971).

Occurrence, function and biosynthesis of wax esters in marine organisms
Lipids, 1970AbstractWax esters occur as a major lipid‐type in at least 30 species of marine animals, distributed among 17 orders and 3 phyla. They are of limited usefulness as a chemotaxonomic character, since only in two suborders, the calanoid copepods, Calanoidei, and the toothed whales, Odontoceti, do the wax esters occur in all members so far examined.

Expression of Genes Involved in Wax Biosynthesis in Leek
1997Accumulation of waxes on the outermost surface of plant cells is a complex process including perception of the necessary need for, biosynthesis of, and transportation and deposition of the waxes. A fair amount of biochemical data is available suggesting that epicuticular plant waxes are derived from stearate and that elongases are involved in ...

AbstractAcyl‐CoA: alcohol transacylase activity was demonstrated in cell‐free homogenates of developing jojoba seeds. The optimal pH was 8.0–8.1. Under optimal conditions, wax formation had a nearly linear relationship with extract concentration; the time course of wax formation was also linear up to 30 min.cis‐11‐Eicosenol was the most effective ...

Biosynthesis of β-diketones and hydrocarbons in barley spike epicuticular wax
Archives of Biochemistry and Biophysics, 1978Abstract Aided by the analysis of induced, single gene mutants in barley, independent elongation systems were inferred for the synthesis of β-diketones (98% hentriacontan-14,16-dione) and hydrocarbons (primarily hentriacontane). This proposal has been substantiated by comparing the effects of preincubations of inhibitors on the ability of whole ...
