Weak boundary layers on wood surfaces
Journal of Adhesion Science and Technology, 2000Adoption of the weak boundary layer (WBL) concept in wood adhesion science and a general extension of the concept are suggested. A distinction is made between a chemical weak boundary layer (CWBL) and a mechanical weak boundary layer (MWBL). Definitions of both CWBL and MWBL are proposed. On wood, a CWBL is caused mainly by extractives migrating to the

Layer‐by‐Layer Assembly Through Weak Interactions and Their Biomedical Applications
Advanced Materials, 2011AbstractThe surface design and control of substrates with nanometer‐ or micrometer‐sized polymer films are of considerable interest for both fundamental and applied studies in the biomedical field because of the required surface properties. The layer‐by‐layer (LbL) technique was discovered in 1991 by Decher and co‐workers for the fabrication of polymer

Preparation for TEM of layered samples with fragile microstructure and weak layer interface
Microscopy Research and Technique, 1999The objective of this work was to prepare for transmission electron microscopy (TEM) a layered structure of materials with fragile microstructure. The samples consisted of two layers of different materials, silicon nitride and borosilicate glass, loosely bonded together.

Measurements of weak layer fracture energy
Cold Regions Science and Technology, 2011Abstract Dry-snow slab avalanches release by a sequence of fractures. The two main parameters which are initially of fundamental importance for the fracture process are the weak layer specific fracture energy and the stiffness of the overlying slab. So far, only few values of weak layer fracture energy exist, mainly because the stiffness of the slab ...

Weak curvature asymptotics for Debye layers as electrohydrodynamic discontinuities
Physical Review E, 2022Important microfluidic phenomena, such as droplet deformation and cell motion, are impacted by the formation of Debye layers at charged interfaces. Previous studies examined interface problems with leaky dielectrics or the formation of diffuse charge layers. In most cases, the results are derived for weakly curved spherical geometries.

Dynamic and weak electric double layers in ultrathin nanopores
The Journal of Chemical Physics, 2021The unique properties of aqueous electrolytes in ultrathin nanopores have drawn a great deal of attention in a variety of applications, such as power generation, water desalination, and disease diagnosis. Inside the nanopore, at the interface, properties of ions differ from those predicted by the classical ionic layering models (e.g., Gouy–Chapman ...

Abstract We present analytic evidence for the existence of small amplitude electron and ion monotonic double layers. These are the nonlinear extensions of the slow electron acoustic wave and the slow ion acoustic wave, respectively: one related to the electron solitary hole (electron phase space vortex), the other related to the ion acoustic solitary

Weak ferromagnetism in InSe:Mn layered crystals
Semiconductors, 2005The electron spin resonance, magnetization, and dynamic magnetic susceptibility of In1−x MnxSe layered crystals (x = 0.0125) are studied. It is found that two different impurity subsystems independently coexist in the crystalline layer and in the interlayer spacing of unannealed samples.

Deviations of seismically inferred rigidity μ of the earth's crust from μ as derived from load tilt observations [Lettau, 1937; Takahasi, 1932] are sometimes used as an argument in favor of the existence of a weak layer in the upper mantle. Some new derivations of μ from loading effects [Tomaschek, 1957; Marussi, 1960; Groten, 1964], however, agree ...
