Numerical evaluation of surface welding residual stress behavior under multiaxial mechanical loading and experimental validations

, 2020
Welding residual stresses have been always seen as a threat to the integrity of structures and components during service loadings. However residual stresses could partially or even totally relax under thermal or mechanical external loads if the sum of ...

Experimental and numerical study on welding residual stress of U-rib stiffened plates

Journal of constructional steel research, 2020
Welding residual stress is inherent to welding of U-rib stiffened plates and it is a “fact of life” that must be accounted for by designers. In this study, the welding residual stresses of U-rib stiffened plates were investigated through numerical and ...

Numerical and experimental investigation of the formation mechanism and the distribution of the welding residual stress induced by the hybrid laser arc welding of AH36 steel in a butt joint configuration

, 2020
Formation mechanism of the welding residual stress (WRS) is a key part of welding research. However, there is a lack of meaningful numerical models of the WRS.

Fatigue strength and residual stress evaluation of repair welding of bogie frame for railway vehicles

, 2021
The bogie frame of a railway vehicle is an important component that supports the load of passengers and cargo. Bogie frames are manufactured using welding owing to their complex geometry.

Residual stress in welded pipe

Steel in Translation, 2014
In recent years, increasing attention has focused on the residual-stress distribution in welded pipe, since residual stress is often responsible for the failure of welded pipe in industrial equipment. Residual stress σres appears in each step of welded-pipe manufacture, which relies on cold plastic shaping.

Influence of lumping passes on calculation accuracy and efficiency of welding residual stress of thick-plate butt joint in boiling water reactor

, 2020
An advanced computing approach based on commercial software ABAQUS was developed to calculate the welding residual stress in a multi-pass butt-welded joint. An equal-density instantaneous heat source model and the lumping-pass method were used to improve

Residual Stresses in Linear Friction Welded IMI550

Journal of Neutron Research, 2004
Residual stresses in linear friction welded (LFW) IMI550 have been determined by means of high energy synchrotron X-ray diffraction. Specimens were studied in the as-welded, and three different post weld heat treated conditions. Mid-thickness-mid-width line scans were recorded across the weld line in the three principal directions of the welds.

Residual Stress Prediction for the Inertia Welding Process

Journal of Neutron Research, 2004
Predictions of residual stresses in inertia friction welded Ni-base superalloys have been carried out using a commercial finite element code (DEFORM) combined with an energy balance approach and a 2D axisymmetric formulation. A coupled thermal and mechanical finite element model has been created.

Residual Stresses Due to Circumferential Welds

Journal of Engineering Materials and Technology, 1973
The residual stress distribution produced by a circumferential weld between axisymmetric shells (cylinders, spheres, cones, etc.) is quite different from that due to a butt weld between two flat plates. The reason for this difference is pointed out and it is shown that the state of stress in thin-walled shells may be estimated from that in a plate ...

Residual Stress Management in Welding: Residual Stress Measurement and Improvement Treatments

Volume 6: Materials Technology; Polar and Arctic Sciences and Technology; Petroleum Technology Symposium, 2012
Residual stress (RS) can significantly affect engineering properties of materials and structural components, notably fatigue life, distortion, dimensional stability, corrosion resistance etc. Residual stresses play an exceptionally significant role in fatigue of welded elements. The influence of residual stresses on the multi-cycle fatigue life of butt
