The Variability in Weld Residual Stress

Volume 6B: Materials and Fabrication, 2019
Abstract Residual stresses resulting from welds are a key consideration in the design and assessment of piping and pressure vessels. As welding is a variable process, the resulting variability in weld residual stress should be accounted for in design and assessment.

Welding residual stresses: a daily history

Science and Technology of Welding and Joining, 2015
Welding is the main joint technology used in steel manufactured products, in particular, in the shipbuilding industry. Recent works report the effect of residual stress redistribution on butt welded plates in a relatively short period after the welding procedures. The phenomenon was investigated by the daily monitoring of the welding residual stresses

Effect of different welding parameters on residual stress and deformation of 20/0Cr18Ni9 dissimilar metal arc-welding joint

, 2020
Pipelines used for the petrochemical, energy, and other industries contain 20 steel and 0Cr18Ni9. This paper based on the finite element simulation software Simufact Welding, the residual stress field and deformation results for 6-mm-thick 20/0Cr18Ni9 ...

Welding Residual Stress and Distortion

2016
The panels, subassemblies and assemblies being welded are subjected to thermal cycles of heating followed by cooling. It causes shrinkage forces to develop in the welded panels. The shrinkage forces tend to cause different degrees of distortion.

Prediction of Weld Residual Stress of Narrow Gap Welds

Transactions of the Korean Society of Mechanical Engineers A, 2010
The conventional welding technique such as shield metal arc welding has been mostly applied to the piping system of the nuclear power plants. It is well known that this welding technique causes the overheating and welding defects due to the large groove angle of weld.

The influence of welding mechanical boundary condition on the residual stress and distortion of a stiffened-panel

Marine Structures, 2019
Stiffened panel structure is one of the most commonly used structure type in ship and offshore engineering, aeronautics and astronautics and other fields. The basic joint type of stiffened panel structure is welding.

Residual stresses in P91 steel electron beam welds

Science and Technology of Welding and Joining, 2013
This paper describes the characterisation of residual stress in electron beam welded P91 ferritic–martensitic steel plates (9 mm thick) by neutron diffraction and contour measurement methods. The novelty of the work lies in revealing the residual stress profile at a fine length scale associated with a ∼1 mm wide fusion zone.

Finite element analysis of residual stress in 2.25Cr-1Mo steel pipe during welding and heat treatment process

Journal of Manufacturing Processes, 2019
The circumferential butt-welded pipe was fabricated using 2.25Cr-1Mo steel and then subjected to local post-weld heat treatment (LPWHT) for releasing residual stress after multi-pass welding. The sectioning method was employed to measure residual stress.
