Snowy Plover Nest Site Selection, Spatial Patterning, and Temperatures in the Southern High Plains of Texas [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Wildlife Management, 2012
Snowy plover (Charadrius nivosus) populations have declined throughout their range, in part because of habitat degradation and poor nest success, making information regarding regionally specific nest site selection and spatial patterns important when ...

Datasets of Bird Species Composition in a Land Reclamation Area of Lake Kahokugata, Central Japan, in Relation to Various Farmland Types. [PDF]

open access: yesEcol Evol
We present a dataset describing bird assemblages in a heterogeneous agricultural landscape surrounding Lake Kahokugata, located in a snow‐rich region on the Sea of Japan side of central Japan. Our data is useful in providing insights into how landscape heterogeneity, cropland composition, and seasonal dynamics influence bird diversity in snowy ...

Using dune restoration on an urban beach as a coastal resilience approach

open access: yesFrontiers in Marine Science, 2023
Coastal dunes are globally recognized as natural features that can be important adaptation approaches for climate change along urban and natural shores.

Population Viability Analysis of the Western Snowy Plover.

open access: yes, 2023
A key component to adaptive management of threatened and endangered species is periodic updating of recovery goals and management priorities after implementation of previous management strategies. This report describes an updated metapopulation viability analysis for the distinct population segment (DPS) of western snowy plover (Charadrius nivosus ...

Climate-related drivers of migratory bird health in the south-central USA. [PDF]

open access: yesBiol Rev Camb Philos Soc
ABSTRACT Migratory birds are species of concern that play important ecological roles while also supporting recreational opportunities for the hunting and birdwatching public. Direct and indirect effects of climate variability, extremes, and change on migratory bird health manifest at the individual, population, species, and community levels.

2021 Final Report on the Western Snowy Plover [PDF]

open access: yes, 2022
In 2021, we continued with the monitoring of the Western Snowy Plover (WSP) population at Coal OilPoint Reserve as in previous years. The number of breeding adults this year (56) was higher than theaverage (37) for our site. The wintering population size (175) was just over the average (167).

High fidelity: extra-pair fertilisations in eight Charadrius plover species are not associated with parental relatedness or social mating system [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
Extra-pair paternity is a common reproductive strategy in many bird species. However, it remains unclear why extra-pair paternity occurs and why it varies among species and populations.

Shorebird Breeding Biology in Wetlands of the Playa Lakes, Texas, USA [PDF]

open access: yes, 2005
Wetlands in the Playa Lakes Region of Texas are important habitats for North American wintering waterfowl and migrant shorebirds. However, shorebird breeding biology has been overlooked in characterizing the region’s ecological importance.

Assessing Accuracy of Sampling Schemes to Estimate Western Snowy Plover Reproductive Success [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Fish and Wildlife Management, 2020
AbstractLike many wildlife species of management concern, the western snowy plover Charadrius nivosus nivosus is the subject of intensive population monitoring. However, intensive monitoring of reproductive success for this shorebird is time-consuming, financially costly, and potentially disruptive to the birds of interest.

Coastal protection and conservation on sandy beaches and dunes: context‐dependent tradeoffs in ecosystem service supply

open access: yesEcosphere, 2017
Managing multiple ecosystem services (ESs) across landscapes presents a central challenge for ecosystem‐based management, because services often exhibit spatiotemporal variation and weak associations with co‐occurring ESs.
