ABSTRACT Aim Understanding the organisation of the wide variety of ecological interactions is crucial to advancing our understanding and management of real ecosystems. We aimed to compile a ‘complete’ network of tetrapod trophic and non‐trophic interactions for the entire North American boreal forest biome that could be analysed to gain insights into ...

2017 Final Report on the Western Snowy Plovers [PDF]
In 2017, we continued with the monitoring of the Western Snowy Plover population at Coal Oil Point Reserve as in previous years. The count of wintering plovers was the second lowest recorded since monitoring began in 2001. The breeding population remained stable at approximately 20 pairs and the number of chicks that fledged was higher than average ...

Latitudinal Variation in the Timing of Nest Predator Activity Is Habitat Specific
ABSTRACT Aim The goal of this work was to investigate whether the community of avian nest predators shifts from nocturnal to diurnal with changes in latitude. This hypothesis was formulated 70 years ago, under the rationale that longer day length during the bird breeding season at high latitudes increases opportunities for visual predators.

2018 Final Report on the Western Snowy Plovers
In 2018, we continued with the monitoring of the Western Snowy Plover population at Coal Oil Point Reserve as in previous years. The number of breeding adults (54), hatched nests (61), and fledged chicks (82) were the highest observed since monitoring began in 2001. The wintering population remained around the average (182) for this site.

2014 Final Report on the Western Snowy Plovers
In 2014 we continued with the monitoring of the WSP population at Coal Oil Point Reserve as in previous years. We had predator control during most of the breeding season, but nest predation by mammalian predators was high. However, chick fledge rates were higher than average. Nesting on the mud flats was also the highest on record.

Fall Field Report, August–November 2015 [PDF]
To start, a housekeeping item: in the species accounts that follow, whenever I use the term migrant I am referring to fall migration only. Many species, of course, have differing migration strategies and timing in spring and fall. Much of the data used

Provision of artificial shelter on beaches is associated with improved shorebird fledging success
Artificial chick shelters might improve productivity of beach-nesting birds threatened by anthropogenic disturbance. We investigated the efficacy of three different chick shelter designs against four criteria: accessibility to chicks over time, thermal ...

2007 Final Report on the Western Snowy Plovers [PDF]
In 2007 we continued with the management of the WSP population at Coal Oil Point Reserve as in previous year. We were not able to track chicks until fledged age as in previous years. I attribute this to the more complex beach profile that prevented a clear view of the beach and the large number of simultaneous broods that hatched in the beginning and ...

Patterns and processes in shorebird survival rates: a global review [PDF]
Changes in demographic rates underpin changes in population size, and understanding demographic rates can greatly aid the design and development of strategies to maintain populations in the face of environmental changes.
