Monitoring Western Snowy Plover Nests with Remote Surveillance Systems in San Francisco Bay, California

open access: yesJournal of Fish and Wildlife Management, 2012
Abstract The western snowy plover Charadrius nivosus nivosus is listed as threatened under the U.S. Endangered Species Act of 1973 due to long-term population declines related, in part, to nest predation and human disturbance. In San Francisco Bay, California, numbers of predators of western snowy plovers and the potential for recreation-

2013 Final Report on the Western Snowy Plovers

open access: yes, 2014
In 2013 we continued with the monitoring of the WSP population at Coal Oil Point Reserve as in previous years. We had predator control during most of the breeding season and the loss of nests from mammalian predators was low. However, chick predation from unknown predators was high. Nesting on the mud flats was also the highest on record.

2015 Final Report on the Western Snowy Plovers

open access: yes, 2017
In 2015, we continued with the monitoring of the WSP population at Coal Oil Point Reserve as in previous years. This year's chick fledge count was higher than average. Nest predation by skunks was a problem until predator control was initiated in early May. The rate of infertile eggs was higher than average.

Factors Affecting Western Snowy Plover Winter Foraging Habitat Selection in San Francisco Bay Ponds [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
Within the San Francisco Bay Area, Western Snowy Plovers (Alexandrinus nivosus nivosus) nest and winter in former salt ponds. They face a number of threats including human-altered habitats and high levels of predation by mesopredators and raptors.

2005 Final Report on the Western Snowy Plovers

open access: yes, 2006
In 2005 we continued with the management of the WSP population at Coal Oil Point Reserve as in previous year. I addition, we started a predator management program and raised chicks from destroyed or abandoned nests. 30 chicks were fledged by their fathers and another 17 were fledged in our hand-raising nursery.
