The political events in Europe in the beginning of 1948 led to the signing of the Treaty of Economic, Social and Cultural Collaboration and Collective Self-Defence at Brussels on 17 March 1948 by Belgium, France, Luxembourg, the Netherlands and the United Kingdom. The Treaty came into force on 25 August 1948.
