Comparison of head space solid phase micro extraction with conventional and comprehensive gas chromatography mass spectrometry for volatile profiling of Irish whiskey

open access: yesTalanta Open
Whiskey is a traditional distilled product produced on the island of Ireland that is currently experiencing a major expansion in export volume. Different styles of Irish whiskey exist, however only some very limited published information exists on the ...

Comprehensive Characterization of Key Flavor‐Active Compounds in Chestnut Liquors Using Complementary HS–SPME–GC–MS and HS–GC–IMS Approaches

open access: yesFood Frontiers, Volume 7, Issue 2, March 2026.
Volatile compounds in chestnut liquors and traditional Baijiu are profiled using HS‐GC‐IMS, HS‐SPME‐GC‐MS, and quantitative sensory evaluation. Esters, particularly ethyl hexanoate, ethyl pentanoate, and ethyl octanoate, are identified as key aroma contributors with intense fruity notes.

Linkage disequilibrium score regression identifies genetic correlations between hepatocellular carcinoma and clinically relevant traits

open access: yesInternational Journal of Cancer, Volume 158, Issue 5, Page 1193-1203, 1 March 2026.
What's New? Hepatocellular carcinoma arises from a combination of environmental and genetic factors, with the latter playing a potentially more significant role in nonviral hepatocellular carcinoma. Here, the authors characterized the genetic correlations and heritability between nonviral hepatocellular carcinoma and 901 epidemiologic, behavioral, and ...

Polyphenolic Activation of Basophils Explains Alcohol Hypersensitivity in AERD

open access: yesThe Laryngoscope, Volume 136, Issue 3, Page 1126-1133, March 2026.
The mechanism behind alcohol sensitivity in AERD has not been previously characterized. This study demonstrates the activation of basophils in patients with CRSwNP and AERD by polyphenolic compounds, but not ethanol. Since these compounds can be found in alcoholic beverages in similar frequencies by which they trigger symptoms, this research provides a

Coumarins in Spirit Beverages: Sources, Quantification, and Their Involvement in Quality, Authenticity and Food Safety

open access: yesApplied Sciences
This comprehensive review is devoted to an under-exploited family of phenolic compounds, the coumarins, and the most relevant strands in which they are involved in some spirit beverages—wine spirit, brandy, whiskey, sugar-cane spirits (rum and cachaça ...

Direct Ambient Mass Spectrometry for Food, Beverage, and Agricultural Sample Analysis and Research

open access: yesMass Spectrometry Reviews, Volume 45, Issue 2, Page 429-452, March/April 2026.
ABSTRACT Ambient and direct mass spectrometry (MS) methods are becoming increasingly used for the rapid analysis of food, beverage and agricultural samples. Novel ionization approaches combined with targeted, or untargeted workflows provide analytical outcomes within a greatly reduced time period compared to traditional separation science coupled with ...

Demystifying fungal systematics: A gateway to fungal literacy and societal/ecological relevance through familiar species

open access: yesPLANTS, PEOPLE, PLANET, Volume 8, Issue 2, Page 499-515, March 2026.
Fungal systematics can feel overwhelming given the vast species diversity within this kingdom, with numerous subgroups at every taxonomic rank. This often creates a disconnect between the undertsnidng of fungal taxonomic diversity and their societal relevance.
