Enhancing whispering gallery mode biosensing
2013 15th International Conference on Transparent Optical Networks (ICTON), 2013First, years of work on advancing the device physics and engineering of WGM biosensors has improved the ultimate physical detection limits of WGM transducers, yet the limits for DNA detection by hybridization has plateaued. Molecular recognition of DNA at a surface limits the biosensors' sensitivity, specificity, and reusability.

Whispering Gallery Mode Devices
2020Whispering gallery mode (WGM) resonators and lately photonic crystal resonator based devices are attractive due to their potential applications in photonics and recently in biophotonics as is described in the previous chapter. Applications which have been realized include for example lasers, filters, optical switches and biosensors.

Surface whispering-gallery mode
EPL (Europhysics Letters), 2011Metamaterials can exhibit electromagnetic characteristics beyond those found in nature. In this letter, we demonstrate that Surface Whispering-gallery mode (SWGM) can be generated by coating a microresonator with a layer of metamaterials. Different from WGM, whose waves are mostly confined within the microresonator, the SWGM propagate at the interface ...

Nonlinear Whispering Gallery Modes
Physical Review Letters, 1999The stationary lasing of the modes in a microdisk is formulated as a nonlinear eigenvalue problem for a nonlinear Maxwell equation. It is shown that whispering gallery modes can be obtained as stationary lasing solutions with finite pumping thresholds.

Classification of whispering gallery modes for cladded systems
Optics & Laser Technology, 2023International audience ; A classification of whispering gallery modes has been proposed between three types : core modes, cladding modes and composed modes. While core modes or cladding modes are interesting to generate with a sensor purpose, composed modes propagate in both core and coating and therefore should be avoided. In this paper, a theoretical

Whispering Gallery Modes Microcavity
2021This chapter introduces the origin of the Whispering-gallery modes (WGM) microcavities. The WGM microcavities have independent optical and mechanical properties. Several terminologies, such as optical or mechanical quality factor, used in cavities are introduced. The mode characterization and field distribution of the microsphere is discussed.

Whispering Gallery Modes at THz
Advanced Optical Materials, 2019AbstractWhispering gallery modes (WGM) offer strong confinement of electromagnetic radiation to specific resonances supported by the geometry of the resonator. In fact, highest ever quality factors are reported in optical and nearāinfrared WGMs along with their applications.

Nonlinear whispering-gallery modes in a microellipse cavity
Optics Letters, 2004We study theoretically the effect of deformed microelliptical cavities on lasing characteristics. We show that the transition of stationary lasing states from unidirectional rotational waves to a mixture of clockwise and anticlockwise rotational waves occurs when the shape of a disk is deformed to that of an ellipse.

Whispering gallery mode profiles in a coated microsphere
The European Physical Journal Special Topics, 2014The properties of whispering gallery modes (WGM) of a microsphere can be tailored by coating the resonator with a thin film. If the coating has a higher refractive index than the microsphere core, the resulting structure will have a configuration which has similarities both with a classical WGM resonator and with a planar waveguide.

Whispering-gallery laser resonators. I. Diffraction of whispering-gallery modes
IEEE Journal of Quantum Electronics, 1991Whispering-gallery optics for use at soft X-ray and extreme ultraviolet wavelengths are examined for their potential applications in laser resonators. An examination is made of beam divergence at the exit of a whispering gallery resonator. The properties of whispering-gallery eigenmodes are reviewed, and the features of their Fourier transforms ...
