Whispering gallery mode microresonators: Fundamentals and applications

La Rivista del Nuovo Cimento, 2011
Confinement of light into small volumes has become an essential requirement for photonic devices; examples of this trend are provided by optical fibers, integrated optical circuits, semiconductor lasers, and photonic crystals. Optical dielectric resonators supporting Whispering Gallery Modes (WGMs) represent another class of cavity devices with ...

Whispering Gallery Mode Biosensor

2010
None of civilization’s socio-political catastrophes (e.g. world wars) have caused an equivalent destructive effect on the world’s population as biological pandemics [1]. Exponentially growing pathogens are difficult to contain and eliminate unless they can be detected early on.

Freestanding Whispering-Gallery Mode microdisk resonator

The 8th Annual IEEE International Conference on Nano/Micro Engineered and Molecular Systems, 2013
This article proposes a high-Q value Whispering-Gallery Mode (WGM) microdisk resonator, which is surrounded by photonic crystal with square lattice. Finite element method (FEM) is performed to model the microdisk resonator, and an ultrahigh quality factor (Q) value of 1.37×108 can be achieved at the wavelength of 1435.4nm.

Whispering gallery mode microresonators as polarization converters

Optics Letters, 2007
A ring resonator coupled to a waveguide can be used as a highly efficient polarization converter when the input is properly polarized. We model this phenomenon and verify the predictions with a demonstration of very efficient polarization conversion (>90%) on a silica microsphere coupled to a tapered optical fiber.

Polymeric whispering gallery mode micro-resonators

2016 IEEE Photonics Conference (IPC), 2016
We review fabrication and optics of polymeric high-Q whispering gallery mode resonators. They are employed as bio-sensors featuring selective parallel functionalization of arrays and integration into lab-on-a-chip systems. Liquid crystalline elastomers enable wide tunability of resonances.

Aptamer Based Whispering Gallery Mode Biosensor

2013
Whispering gallery mode resonators (WGMR), in the form of optical silica microspheres, have been recently proposed as an efficient tool for the realisation of optical biosensors. A crucial step for producing reliable biosensors is their surface functionalization. In this work we report a functionalization process based on the use of a DNA aptamer. Also

White-light whispering gallery mode resonators

Optics Letters, 2006
We propose theoretically and demonstrate experimentally white-light whispering gallery mode resonators. These resonators have essentially a continuous modal spectrum accompanied by ultrahigh-Q frequency-independent quality factors. Applications of the resonators for ringdown spectroscopy and light modulation are discussed.

Whispering gallery mode resonators for microlasers and microsensors

2005
In dielectric spheres light can be guided through high-Q whispering-gallery-modes (WGMs) with an unique combination of strong temporal and spatial confinement of light. Glass microspheres are then of interest for a large number of applications including compact lasers sources and biological sensing.
