Extending sampling approaches for great crested newt (Triturus cristatus) eDNA monitoring
Environmental DNA (eDNA) monitoring has been used for great crested newt (Triturus cristatus) survey in the UK since the publication of a Defra‐funded trial in 2014 and approval of a regulated protocol. Our study provides evidence that changes to this protocol, including use of filtration for eDNA capture and permitting eDNA surveys in July and August,

Habitat use by the endangered white-clawed crayfishAustropotamobiusspecies complex: a systematic review [PDF]
Understanding habitat requirements is a key part of conserving declining species, particularly when reintroductions are planned as part of the recovery strategy. The white-clawed crayfish (Austropotamobius pallipes) has undergone severe declines across its range and is now classified by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) as ...

Predatory functional response and prey choice identify predation differences between native/invasive and parasitised/unparasitised crayfish. [PDF]
BACKGROUND: Invasive predators may change the structure of invaded communities through predation and competition with native species. In Europe, the invasive signal crayfish Pacifastacus leniusculus is excluding the native white clawed crayfish ...

Queensnake as a rally‐point for species‐at‐risk conservation. Abstract A major challenge in conservation biology is to prevent the loss of species and communities that are critical to biodiversity on Earth. One of the tools governing bodies have to ameliorate the loss of species is through Species at Risk legislation.

Evaluating techniques for sampling stream crayfish (paranephrops planifrons)
We evaluated several capture and analysis techniques for estimating abundance and size structure of freshwater crayfish (Paranephrops planifrons) (koura) from a forested North Island, New Zealand stream to provide a methodological basis for future ...

The Chinese mitten crab (Eriocheir sinensis) is considered amongst the most damaging invasive species globally; however, the UK distribution of the species is not well known, with current management protocols reliant on reports of individual sightings. In this study, the first probe‐based, species‐specific qPCR assay was developed for the detection of ...

MANAGING AN ABUNDANT CRAYFISH RESOURCE FOR CONSERVATION -A. PALLIPES IN IRELAND
Irish white-clawed crayfish stocks show high genetic uniformity between systems, although individual populations usually show good heterozygosity. The inference is that they were derived from a single immigrating stock, related to those in Western France.

ABSTRACT The AquaEcOmics meeting brought together 280 scientists applying omics tools to aquatic research in March 2025 (Evian‐les‐Bains, France). We synthesised here the main outcomes from the 167 presentations which were given. A similar number of presentations were about micro‐ and macroorganisms.
