Factors influencing spatial heterogeneity of female white‐tailed deer harvest dynamics

open access: yesWildlife Society Bulletin, 2016
Successful management of exploited wildlife populations is contingent upon understanding what variables most affect mortality rates (e.g., legal harvest mortality) and adopting regulations that directly address those factors in a manner that accomplishes

Administering GonaConTM to White-Tailed Deer Via Hand-Injection Versus Syringe-Dart

open access: yesHuman-Wildlife Interactions, 2017
Immunocontraceptive vaccines have shown some promise for fertility control of white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) in urban and suburban habitats where traditional methods of population control may not be applicable.

Immunocontraception of White‐Tailed Deer with GnRH Vaccine

open access: yesAmerican Journal of Reproductive Immunology, 2000
PROBLEM: Reduction of excess numbers of white‐tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) is an example of a potential use for immunocontraception as a means of wildlife population management.
METHOD OF STUDY: A 4 year multifaceted study was conducted to determine the long term effects of gonadotropin releasing hormone (GnRH) contraceptive vaccine on the ...

Bovine Viral Diarrhea Virus (BVDV) in White-Tailed Deer (Odocoileus virginianus)

open access: yesFrontiers in Microbiology, 2016
Bovine viral diarrhea virus (BVDV) is the prototypic member of the genus Pestivirus in the family Flaviviridae. Infections with BVDV cause substantial economic losses to the cattle industries, prompting various organized control programs in several ...

Life‐history trade‐offs and environmental variability shape reproductive demography in a mountain ungulate

open access: yesJournal of Animal Ecology, EarlyView.
Alpine ecosystems are changing rapidly with implications for the demography of alpine organisms. Through long‐term study, we reveal novel insights about the interplay between life‐history trade‐offs and environmental variation, and how they shape the reproductive demography of climate‐sensitive wildlife.

Harvest and natural predation shape selection for behavioural predictability in male wild turkeys

open access: yesJournal of Animal Ecology, EarlyView.
Male wild turkeys with riskier behavioural types were more predictable in their behavioural expression and more likely to be killed by both hunters and predators. If risk‐taking behaviour is heritable, selective removal of riskier and more predictable individuals may reduce harvest success over time, making wild turkeys increasingly difficult for ...

Can coyote predation risk induce reproduction suppression in white-tailed deer?

open access: yes, 2016
Predators can have powerful nonconsumptive effects on their prey by inducing behavioral, physiological, and morphological responses. These nonconsumptive effects may influence prey demography if they decrease birthrates or increase susceptibility to ...

Apex predators exploit advantageous snow conditions across hunting modes

open access: yesJournal of Animal Ecology, EarlyView.
Advantageous snow conditions—in terms of snow depth and density—are among the most important features of the winter landscape for two apex predators, regardless of hunting strategy. In a warming climate, the knock‐on effects of a diminishing snowpack may reduce the hunting success of multiple large carnivore species.
