Genomic Insights into the Origin, High Fecundity and Environmental Adaptation of Hu Sheep

open access: yesAdvanced Science, Volume 12, Issue 37, October 6, 2025.
The Hu sheep diverged from the Small‐tailed Han sheep ≈1330 years ago, and subsequently migrated from northern to warm and humid southern regions. The genes BMPR1B, UNC5C, and GRID2 play a synergistic role in the superior reproductive traits of Hu sheep.

High Elevation Occurrences of Jaguars (Panthera onca, Linnaeus 1758) (Mammalia, Felidae) in Northwestern Mexico, With a Record of Collaborative Interactions

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, Volume 15, Issue 10, October 2025.
Jaguars in the northern end of their distribution have recently become the center of conservation efforts; however, the State of Chihuahua has been underrepresented in monitoring projects. We present five new records of jaguars in high altitudes as well as the first evidence of two jaguars exhibiting cooperative behavior in Mexico.

Do Wolves Protect Forests? Investigating the Link Between Wolf Density, Deer Browse, and Plant Recovery

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, Volume 15, Issue 10, October 2025.
We planted white oak (Quercus alba), red oak (Quercus rubra), and zigzag goldenrod (Solidago flexicaulis) seedlings across a gradient of wolf density and residence time in northern Wisconsin and recorded deer browse and frequency of 11 common understory plants at each site.

Sapsucker Wells as a Keystone Nutritional Resource: Evaluating Methods for Detection of Secondary Sap Consumers

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, Volume 15, Issue 10, October 2025.
We used direct observations, camera traps, and environmental DNA (eDNA) to identify secondary consumers of sap from wells created by red‐naped (S. nuchalis) and Williamson's (S. thyroideus) sapsuckers among three groups of shrubs and trees in south‐central Colorado, USA.

Genetic and Landscape Connectivity of Blacklegged Ticks During Range Expansion in Select States of the Midwestern USA

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, Volume 15, Issue 10, October 2025.
Blacklegged ticks (Ixodes scapularis), vectors of Lyme disease, have expanded across the Midwestern USA since the 1970s, with at least three genetically structured populations. Fine‐scale genomic and landscape analyses reveal distinct gene flow corridors and barriers, highlighting how environmental connectivity shapes tick range expansion and informing
