Circulating tumor cells in metastatic breast cancer patients treated with immune checkpoint inhibitors – a biomarker analysis of the ALICE and ICON trials

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
In this explorative biomarker analysis, we assessed serial sampling of circulating tumor cells (CTCs) with CellSearch in two randomized trials testing immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) in metastatic breast cancer. Our data demonstrate a prognostic potential of CTCs, most apparent 4 weeks into ICI therapy.

Blood cell image segmentation and classification: a systematic review [PDF]

open access: yesPeerJ Computer Science
Background Blood diseases such as leukemia, anemia, lymphoma, and thalassemia are hematological disorders that relate to abnormalities in the morphology and concentration of blood elements, specifically white blood cells (WBC) and red blood cells (RBC ...

Environmental Circadian Disruption Elevates the IL-6 Response to Lipopolysaccharide in Blood [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
The immune system is regulated by circadian clocks within the brain and immune cells. Environmental circadian disruption (ECD), consisting of a 6-h phase advance of the light:dark cycle once a week for 4 weeks, elevates the inflammatory response to ...

A comparative study of circulating tumor cell isolation and enumeration technologies in lung cancer

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Lung cancer cells were spiked into donor blood to evaluate the recovery rates of the following circulating tumor cell (CTC) enrichment technologies: CellMag™, EasySep™, RosetteSep™, Parsortix® PR1, and Parsortix® Prototype systems. Each method's advantages and disadvantages are described.

Exploring the value of hybrid capture-based next-generation sequencing technology in the suspected diagnosis of bloodstream infections [PDF]

open access: yesPeerJ
Background Determining the source of infection is significant for the treatment of bloodstream infections (BSI). The gold standard of blood infection detection, blood cultures, have low positive rates to meet clinical needs.

Imaging human blood cells in vivo with oblique back-illumination capillaroscopy [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2020
We present a non-invasive, label-free method of imaging blood cells flowing through human capillaries in vivo using oblique back-illumination capillaroscopy (OBC). Green light illumination allows simultaneous phase and absorption contrast, enhancing the ability to distinguish red and white blood cells.

Validation of the Medonic CA620/530 Vet 20-ml microcapillary sampler system for hematology testing of feline blood [PDF]

open access: yes, 2009
The aim of the current study was to compare feline hematologic variables in blood collected in microcapillary tubes (20 ml) and conventional blood tubes with the Medonic CA620/530 Vet in-house hematologic analyzer.

Circulating tumor DNA (ctDNA) trajectories predict survival in trifluridine/tipiracil‐treated metastatic colorectal cancer patients

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
The authors applied joint/mixed models that predict mortality of trifluridine/tipiracil‐treated metastatic colorectal cancer patients based on circulating tumor DNA (ctDNA) trajectories. Patients at high risk of death could be spared aggressive therapy with the prospect of a higher quality of life in their remaining lifetime, whereas patients with a ...

Effects Inhalation of Kerosene and Naphtha Fumes on Some Blood Indices in Rats [PDF]

open access: yesInternational Journal of Biomedicine
Background: Multiple studies, including both humans and animals, have demonstrated that gasoline, kerosene, and diesel fuel exhaust emissions include chemical components harmful to the bone marrow, lymph nodes, and spleen.

A New Strategy for the Morphological and Colorimetric Recognition of Erythrocytes for the Diagnosis of Forms of Anemia based on Microscopic Color Images of Blood Smears [PDF]

open access: yesInternational journal of advanced computer science and applications (IJACSA), 2020, 11 (7), pp.488-497, 2023
The detection of red blood cells based on morphology and colorimetric appearance is very important in improving hematology diagnostics. There are automatons capable of detecting certain forms, but these have limitations with regard to the formal identification of red blood cells because they consider certain cells to be red blood cells when they are ...
