BAX inhibitor-1 (BI-1) was originally described as an anti-apoptotic protein in both animal and plant cells. BI-1 overexpression suppresses ER stress-induced apoptosis in animal cells. Inhibition of BI-1 activity could induce the cell death in mammals and plants. However, the function of BI-1 in crustacean immunity was unclear.
