Impact of whole-grain interventions on serum vitamin D levels in individuals at risk of diabetes

open access: yesFrontiers in Nutrition
IntroductionWe examined the effects of a whole-grain intervention on serum vitamin D levels in pre-diabetic individuals in China.MethodsParticipants aged 18–65 years at risk of diabetes participated in a 12-week randomised parallel controlled trial ...

Bioactive Conductive Ti3C2Tx‐Ce Hydrogel Facilitates Spinal Cord Injury Repair Through ROS Scavenging and Mitochondrial Regulation

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Bioactive conductive Ti3C2Tx‐Ce hydrogels with with scavenging ROS and alleviating neuronal mitochondrial dysfunction are exploited for SCI treatment. This functionality is attributed to interfacial activation modification of Ti3C2Tx with Ce3+ ions to in‐situ form Ce(OH)x‐mediated protective layer, which is beneficial to enabling stable intracellular ...

Revealing the Hidden Role of Cd in p‐Type Mg3Sb2: Enhanced Thermoelectric Performance by Grain Boundary Segregation Engineering

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
The hidden role of Cd segregation at grain boundaries is revealed in p‐type Mg3Sb2 by atom probe tomography and other advanced characterizations. Grain boundary Cd enrichment suppresses the SbMg+ hole‐killer formation and lowers potential barriers, enhancing electrical conductivity.

Association of whole grains, dairy and dietary fibre with neonatal outcomes in women with gestational diabetes mellitus: The WINGS project (WINGS – 12)

open access: yesJournal of Diabetology, 2019
Background: Dietary modifications have been shown to lower the risk for gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM). However, there is little evidence whether dietary modifications during pregnancy can improve neonatal outcomes in women with GDM, particularly in

A Synovium‐on‐Chip Platform to Study Multicellular Interactions in Arthritis

open access: yesAdvanced Healthcare Materials, EarlyView.
The Synovium‐on‐Chip comprises a thin microporous PDMS membrane to support co‐culture of fibroblast‐like synoviocytes (FLS), THP‐1‐derived macrophages, and endothelial cells, enabling real‐time analysis of synovial‐vascular interactions. FLS migration through the pores drives endothelial remodeling, while TNF‐α stimulation induces robust inflammatory ...

Resolving the Structural Duality of Graphene Grain Boundaries

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
Cantilever ncAFM resolves the atomic structure of grain boundaries in graphene, revealing coexisting stable and metastable types. Both contain pentagon/heptagon defects, but metastable GBs show irregular geometries. Modeling shows metastable GBs form under compression, exhibiting vertical corrugation, while stable GBs are flat.

Functional Properties of Polyphenols in Grains and Effects of Physicochemical Processing on Polyphenols

open access: yesJournal of Food Quality, 2019
Phenolic compounds are important products of secondary metabolism in plants. They cannot be synthesized in the human body and are mainly taken from food. Cereals, especially whole grains, are important sources of dietary polyphenols.

Self‐Assembled Inorganic Nanomembrane Tubes: Rolled‐Up Piezoelectrics for Microacoustic Wave‐Based Actuators and Sensors

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
This study demonstrates a self‐assembly process to generate free‐standing piezoelectric nanomembranes, forming ultracompact microtubular acoustic wave sensors and actuators. The miniaturized 3D piezoelectric platform reported in this work can be applied in telecommunication, energy harvesting, and acoustofluidics. Moreover, the 3D self‐assembly can add

Whole Grains, Legumes, and the Subsequent Meal Effect: Implications for Blood Glucose Control and the Role of Fermentation

open access: yesJournal of Nutrition and Metabolism, 2012
Whole grains and legumes are known to reduce postprandial glycemia and, in some instances, insulinemia. However, the subsequent meal effect of ingesting whole grains and legumes is less well known.
