Free text adversity statements as part of a contextualised admissions process: a qualitative analysis

open access: yesBMC Medical Education, 2018
Background Medical schools globally are encouraged to widen access and participation for students from less privileged backgrounds. Many strategies have been implemented to address this inequality, but much still needs to be done to ensure fair access ...

Higher Education, Widening Access and Market Failure: Towards a Dual Pricing Mechanism in England

open access: yesSocial Sciences, 2019
Over a period of around fifteen years English higher education has become characterised by an increasingly marketise and differentiated system, most recently with the encouragement of new “challenger” providers potentially creating price ...

Design and analysis strategies for robust microbiome ageing research

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
The gut microbiome changes with age and associates with age‐related morbidity and mortality, establishing it as a potential biomarker and intervention target for ageing. Realising this potential requires methodological rigour, yet distinguishing biological signals from methodological artefacts remains challenging across cohorts. This review provides an

Meritocracy, Legitimation and Belonging on the University of Cambridge’s Foundation Year

open access: yesSocial Sciences
Widening participation spans the whole student lifecycle, from access through to success within higher education and progression beyond it, yet policy and evaluation have concentrated on the access stage alone.

Tumour–host interactions in Drosophila: mechanisms in the tumour micro‐ and macroenvironment

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
This review examines how tumour–host crosstalk takes place at multiple levels of biological organisation, from local cell competition and immune crosstalk to organism‐wide metabolic and physiological collapse. Here, we integrate findings from Drosophila melanogaster studies that reveal conserved mechanisms through which tumours hijack host systems to ...

Plant a seed series: the impact of an online outreach package on school pupils’ knowledge, skills, and attitudes to medicine

open access: yesBMC Medical Education
Background Medicine is one of the most inaccessible professions in the United Kingdom (UK). The Plant a Seed (PAS) series was created to address this; it is an online pre-recorded three-part video series to “Inspire”, “Educate” and “Motivate” pupils from

Profiling neoadjuvant therapy response in rectal cancer using meta‐analysis of publicly available transcriptomic RNA‐seq datasets

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
This study integrates publicly available transcriptomic datasets to identify molecular signatures associated with response to neoadjuvant chemoradiotherapy in locally advanced rectal cancer. By analyzing a combination of multiple cohorts with bioinformatics approaches, we reveal biological pathways and immune‐related features that may improve ...

Analysing the significance of small conformational changes and low occupancy states in serial crystallographic data

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
This protocol paper outlines methods to establish the success of a time‐resolved serial crystallographic experiment, by means of statistical analysis of timepoint data in reciprocal space and models in real space. We show how to amplify the signal from excited states to visualise structural changes in successful experiments.

“I’d keep going until somebody said no and nobody ever said no”: exploring identity-strengths amongst medical students from widening participation backgrounds

open access: yesFrontiers in Medicine
BackgroundWidening participation is an important consideration in medicine, which has been historically elitist. Despite the evolving evidence base on WP in medicine and advancing of discourse around conceptualizing WP, the identity of students from WP ...
