The definitions and methods of computing the Wiener index are reviewed. It is pointed out that the Wiener index is a useful topological index in the structure-property relationship because it is a measure of the compactness of a molecule in terms of its structural chracteristics, such as branching and cyclicity.

Taming a Blue Gas—Structure and Chemistry of Hexafluorothioacetone

Hexafluorothioacetone (1), a blue gas at r.t., was synthesized by flash vacuum pyrolysis of its cyclic dimer at 660°C. We discuss fundamental properties of elusive 1, including single‐crystal structure and nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, despite its tendency to dimerize even at –74°C.

Extremal estimates of the Wiener index for weakly connected directed graphs

The article considers the Wiener index for weakly connected directed graphs. For such graphs, the distance $d(u,v)$ between vertices $u$ and $v$ is not always defined, which requires a correction for the Wiener index to be meaningful.
