The global biomass of wild mammals

open access: yesProceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the United States of America, 2023
Significance Mammals include some of the best-known species of animals, and are icons of conservation efforts. Despite their status, there is no rigorous estimate available for their overall global biomass.

Crosstalk between the ribosome quality control‐associated E3 ubiquitin ligases LTN1 and RNF10

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Loss of the E3 ligase LTN1, the ubiquitin‐like modifier UFM1, or the deubiquitinating enzyme UFSP2 disrupts endoplasmic reticulum–ribosome quality control (ER‐RQC), a pathway that removes stalled ribosomes and faulty proteins. This disruption may trigger a compensatory response to ER‐RQC defects, including increased expression of the E3 ligase RNF10 ...

Genomic DNA barcodes provide novel insights into species delimitation in the complex Camellia sect. Thea (Theaceae)

open access: yesBMC Plant Biology
Background Species delimitation within Camellia sect. Thea is taxonomically challenging due to its complex evolutionary history. This study aims to utilize nuclear and chloroplast data as genomic DNA barcodes to delimit species within this economically ...

High extinction risk for wild coffee species and implications for coffee sector sustainability

open access: yesScience Advances, 2019
Extinction threatens at least 60% of wild coffee species, including those that are key to the future of the global coffee sector. Wild coffee species are critical for coffee crop development and, thus, for sustainability of global coffee production ...

Towards automatic wild animal monitoring: Identification of animal species in camera-trap images using very deep convolutional neural networks [PDF]

open access: yesEcological Informatics, 2016
Non intrusive monitoring of animals in the wild is possible using camera trapping framework, which uses cameras triggered by sensors to take a burst of images of animals in their habitat.

Protein pyrophosphorylation by inositol pyrophosphates — detection, function, and regulation

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Protein pyrophosphorylation is an unusual signaling mechanism that was discovered two decades ago. It can be driven by inositol pyrophosphate messengers and influences various cellular processes. Herein, we summarize the research progress and challenges of this field, covering pathways found to be regulated by this posttranslational modification as ...

An upstream open reading frame regulates expression of the mitochondrial protein Slm35 and mitophagy flux

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
This study reveals how the mitochondrial protein Slm35 is regulated in Saccharomyces cerevisiae. The authors identify stress‐responsive DNA elements and two upstream open reading frames (uORFs) in the 5′ untranslated region of SLM35. One uORF restricts translation, and its mutation increases Slm35 protein levels and mitophagy.

Environmental Factors, Developmental Genes and Oxidative Stress Determine Inter-Species Variability in Seed Longevity in Salicaceae

open access: yesPlants
Dry seed longevity varies considerably among species, but little is known about its relation with the climate and the molecular mechanisms that determine seed lifespan.

A revision of Dryopteris sect. Diclisodon (Dryopteridaceae) based on morphological and molecular evidence with description of a new species

open access: yesPlant Diversity, 2022
Dryopteris sect. Diclisodon is a small section of ferns with about 12 species mainly distributed in East Asia. Here, we carried out morphological and phylogenetic analyses of this section. A new species from southwest China, D.
