True hermaphroditism in a wistar rat

open access: yesBrazilian Journal of Veterinary Pathology, 2009
A rare case of true hermaphroditism was observed in a 9-week-old presumed female Wistar rat. This rat did not reveal any untoward clinical signs, food consumption, body weight gain and changes in haemato-biochemical parameters.

Deriving a Provisional Tolerable Intake for Intravenous Exposure to Silver Nanoparticles Released from Medical Devices [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
Silver nanoparticles (AgNP) are incorporated into medical devices for their anti-microbial characteristics. The potential exposure and toxicity of AgNPs is unknown due to varying physicochemical particle properties and lack of toxicological data. The aim

Glutamatergic transmission in the central nucleus of the amygdala is selectively altered in Marchigian Sardinian alcohol-preferring rats: Alcohol and CRF effects [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
The CRF system of the central nucleus of the amygdala (CeA) is important for the processing of anxiety, stress, and effects of acute and chronic ethanol.

An algorithm for seizure detection in rodents

open access: yesEpilepsia Open, EarlyView.
Abstract Objective Epilepsy animal research often relies on long‐term intracranial electroencephalographic (iEEG) recordings. Here, we describe an artificial neural network (ANN) algorithm for automatic detection of seizures. Methods The algorithm was trained on iEEG recordings of three mouse models of chronic epilepsy: (1) the pilocarpine model of ...

Histological Effects of Aqueous Extract of Carica papaya Seed on the Renal Tissue in Adult Wistar Rats

open access: yesSokoto Journal of Medical Laboratory Science, 2019
Attention has been given to some tropical fruit that are of medicinal importance among which is Carica papaya. Papaya is the fruit of the plant carica papaya and the sole specie in the genus carica of the caricacae family.

Degeneration of Rat Retina is Paralleled by an Imbalance of the Redox Mechanism of Pteridines

open access: yesPteridines, 1996
The RCS rat suffers from a genetic degeneration of retinal cell We have examined the pattern of oxidized and reduced monapterin and biopterin in retinas from RCS retinas and controls.

Decreased reward sensitivity in rats from the Fischer344 strain compared to Wistar rats is paralleled by differences in endocannabinoid signaling.

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2012
BackgroundThe aim of the present study was to examine if differences in the endocannabinoid (ECB) system might be linked to strain specific variations in reward-related behavior in Fischer344 (Fischer) and Wistar rats.Methodology/principal findingsTwo ...

Prebiotic effects: metabolic and health benefits [PDF]

open access: yes, 2010
The different compartments of the gastrointestinal tract are inhabited by populations of micro-organisms. By far the most important predominant populations are in the colon where a true symbiosis with the host exists that is a key for well-being and ...

Absence seizures: Update on signaling mechanisms and networks

open access: yesEpilepsia Open, EarlyView.
Abstract Absence seizures (AS) are a hallmark of genetic generalized epilepsies (GGE), characterized by brief episodes of impaired consciousness accompanied by electroencephalographic spike‐and‐wave discharges (SWDs). Traditionally attributed to cortico‐thalamo‐cortical (CTC) dysrhythmia, emerging evidence suggests a more intricate pathophysiological ...

Gestational diabetes induces neuronal loss in dentate gyrus in rat offspring [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
Background: This study was conducted to determine the effect of gestational diabetes on neuronal density in the dentate gyrus (DG) subfields of hippocampus in rats offspring. Methods: On day 1 of gestation, 10 dams randomly allocated into two control and
