WNV-labeled corticospinal motor neurons in the cortical layer 5 of the primary motor cortex.

open access: yes, 2016
Inset shows one of the circled areas at higher magnification. Red arrowhead points to a large WNV-labeled corticospinal motor neuron (Betz cell). Note that all three circled WNV- labeled Betz cells are damaged and undergoing neuronophagia (7 dpi).

Outbreak of autochthonous West Nile virus infection in Lazio region, Italy, July to August 2025: preliminary investigation

open access: yesEurosurveillance
In July–18 August 2025, 171 autochthonous cases with West Nile virus (WNV) infection were confirmed in Lazio, Italy: four asymptomatic blood donors, 110 with WNV fever, 57 with neuroinvasive syndrome and nine deaths.

IFN-Dependent and -Independent Reduction in West Nile Virus Infectivity in Human Dermal Fibroblasts

open access: yesViruses, 2014
Although dermal fibroblasts are one of the first cell types exposed to West Nile virus (WNV) during a blood meal by an infected mosquito, little is known about WNV replication within this cell type.

Characterising fine‐scale habitat associations for range expanding species with limited data: a case study on the West Nile Virus vector, Culex modestus

open access: yesOikos, EarlyView.
The ecological and epidemiological consequences of species expanding into new areas are growing concomitantly with climate change. Those aiming to monitor species expanding in range must make optimal use of finite resources to deliver effective surveillance capable of detecting new incursions and range expansions.

WNV-labeled neurons in the deep cerebellar nuclei.

open access: yes, 2016
(A) Low magnification overview image showing many WNV-labeled neurons in the dentate nucleus (Dt), emboliform nucleus (Emb), and globose nucleus (Glo) (9 dpi). B and C show corresponding boxed areas at higher magnification. Scale bars: 100 μm.

Conserved dimerization architecture in C‐type lectins from virus‐vector mosquitoes

open access: yesThe FEBS Journal, EarlyView.
C‐type lectins (CTLs) are involved in the detection of viral/microbial carbohydrates. We studied a family of soluble CTLs in the mosquito Aedes aegypti, which acts as a vector for viruses like dengue and Zika. Using crystallography, biophysics, and structure prediction approaches, we found that these proteins consistently pair together in the same ...

Engagement of AKT and ERK signaling pathways facilitates infection of human neuronal cells with West Nile virus

open access: yesJournal of Virus Eradication
West Nile virus (WNV) is an important neurotropic virus that accounts for the emergence of human arboviral encephalitis and meningitis. The interaction of WNV with signaling pathways plays a key role in controlling WNV infection. We have investigated the

Advances in Cytosolic dsRNA Sensing of Viral Infections

open access: yesImmunology &Cell Biology, EarlyView.
Activation of cytosolic dsRNA sensors by viral infection generates multiple outcomes. dsRNA generated during viral infection, either of viral origin or from endogenous sources, can activate multiple cytosolic dsRNA sensors. Activation of PKR critically induces protein translation shutdown via phosphorylation of eukaryotic translation initiation factor ...

Expression of WNV proteins encoded by plasmid pcDNA-WNV.

open access: yes, 2014
(A) Immunofluorescence analysis of E protein expression. HeLa cells were transfected with pcDNA or pcDNA-WNV and, 24 h later, fixed and processed for immunofluorescence using a monoclonal anti-E and a secondary antibody coupled to Alexa Fluor 594. Nuclei
