Online control of wood peeling process: acoustical and vibratory measurements of lathe checks frequency [PDF]

open access: yes, 2007
In the course of most wood machining processes, operators are usually able to detect various problems simply by hearing the sound emitted by the process. This is especially true for wood peeling.

Still rethinking the value of high wood density [PDF]

open access: yesAmerican Journal of Botany, 2012
• Premise of the study: In a previous paper, we questioned the traditional interpretation of the advantages and disadvantages of high wood density (Functional Ecology 24: 701–705). Niklas and Spatz (American Journal of Botany 97: 1587–1594) challenged the biomechanical relevance of studying properties of dry wood, including dry wood density, and stated

Use of Agave durangensis Bagasse Fibers in the Production of Wood-Based Medium Density Fiberboard (MDF) [PDF]

open access: yes, 2022
There is an increasing interest in using non-wood lignocellulosic materials for the production of wood-based medium density fiberboard (MDF). Agave durangensis Gentry bagasse is a waste product produced in large quantities in the mezcal industry.

Replication data for: Limitations to use of infrared spectroscopy for rapid determination of carbon-nitrogen and wood density for tropical species [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
Infrared (IR) spectroscopy was used as a rapid and non-destructive method to determine, carbon (C), nitrogen (N) and tree wood density.A total of 82 sample cores were scanned in the reflectance mode from 4000 to 400 cm-1 for mid-infrared (MIR) spectra ...

Effects of early thinning regime and tree status on the radial growth and wood density of Scots pine

open access: yesSilva Fennica, 2007
In this work, we studied the effects of early thinning on the radial growth and wood density over a 12-year post-thinning period in Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) trees grown on a site with a rather poor nutrient supply.

Using machine learning to predict the density profiles of surface-densified wood based on cross-sectional images [PDF]

open access: yes, 2022
Over the past decades, the surface densification of solid wood has received increased attention. However, the inhomogeneous density distribution in the densification direction might be a challenge with regard to process control within a large-scale ...

Transferrin receptor 1‐mediated iron uptake supports thermogenic activation in human cervical‐derived adipocytes

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
In this study, we found that human cervical‐derived adipocytes maintain intracellular iron level by regulating the expression of iron transport‐related proteins during adrenergic stimulation. Melanotransferrin is predicted to interact with transferrin receptor 1 based on in silico analysis.

From mice to humans—divergent strategies for intestinal homeostasis and regeneration

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Recent advances such as organoid genome editing, xenotransplantation, imaging, and whole‐genome sequencing have enabled direct studies of human intestinal stem cells (ISCs). These studies reveal species‐specific features, including slower ISC proliferation, distinct injury responses, slower somatic mutation accumulation in humans, and an inverse ...

Physical and chemical properties of three wild almond wood species grown in Zagros forests

open access: yesLes, 2022
In this study, the physical properties (oven-dry density, basic density, volumetric shrinkage, and swelling) and structural components (cellulose, lignin, and extractives content) of three wild almond wood species from southwestern Iran, namely ...

Subtype‐specific enhancer RNAs define transcriptional regulators and prognosis in breast cancers

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
This study employed machine learning methodologies to perform the subtype‐specific classification of RNA‐seq data sets, which are mapped on enhancers from TCGA‐derived breast cancer patients. Their integration with gene expression (referred to as ProxCReAM eRNAs) and chromatin accessibility profiles has the potential to identify lineage‐specific and ...
