Quantum Minimal Length and Transplanckian Photons [PDF]

open access: yes, 1999
In this paper we first give arguments supporting the idea that a B.T.Z black hole can face a transplankian problem even when its mass is small. K.M.M quantum theory is applied to the Hawking evaporation of the Schwarzchild and B.T.Z black holes.

Nuclear pore links Fob1‐dependent rDNA damage relocation to lifespan control

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Damaged rDNA accumulates at a specific perinuclear interface that couples nucleolar escape with nuclear envelope association. Nuclear pores at this site help inhibit Fob1‐induced rDNA instability. This spatial organization of damage handling supports a functional link between nuclear architecture, rDNA stability, and replicative lifespan in yeast.

Chameleon sequences reveal structural effects in proteins representing micelle‐like distribution of hydrophobicity

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Amino acids sequence of two different proteins with the same sequence (chameleon sequence—black boxes) represent in 3D structure of the proteins different secondary structures: HHHH—helical and BBB—Beta‐structural. The chains folded in water environment adopt different III‐order structures in which the chameleon fragments appear to adopt similar status

Structure stability in the simple element sodium under pressure

open access: yes, 2009
The simple alkali metal Na, that crystallizes in a body-centred cubic structure at ambient pressure, exhibits a wealth of complex phases at extreme conditions as found by experimental studies.

Matrix metalloproteinase‐9 regulates cell adhesion and membrane protrusive activity of ovarian cancer cells

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Matrix metalloproteinase‐9 (MMP9) drives ovarian cancer progression. Using MMP9‐null cells (M9‐KO) created from ovarian cancer cells, we found MMP9 loss did not block Epidermal Growth Factor (EGF)‐driven E‐cadherin dissolution or EMT but delayed and reduced EGF‐driven membrane protrusions. Transient MMP9 re‐expression drove membrane protrusion.

Systemic dysregulation of apolipoproteins in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis serum

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a fatal disease that damages motor neurons. This study found that people with ALS show significant changes in blood fats and the proteins that carry them. Several apolipoproteins were higher, lipid balances were altered, and normal protein–lipid relationships were disrupted.

Tool Wear Effect on Cutting Forces: In Routing process of Aleppo Pine Wood [PDF]

open access: yes, 2009
This paper uses the cutting forces in a routing process of Aleppo pine wood to estimate the tool wear effect. The aim is to obtain further information about the tool wear effect by monitoring the variation in the cutting forces.

The skills required for transition to university and study in biological sciences: A student perspective

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Bioscience students were asked for their opinions on the value and teaching of skills. 204 responded that teamwork, time management and study skills are necessary to reach University, that scientific writing, research, laboratory and presentation skills are taught effectively during their studies, while other skills are gained inherently through study ...

Study on the Evolution Characteristics of Two-Zone Failure Mode of the Overburden Strata under Shallow Buried Thick Seam Mining

open access: yesAdvances in Civil Engineering, 2019
There are risks of water burst and sand inrush in the working face of the Northwest Mining Area in China. Based on the 22407 working face of Halagou coal mine, the evolution characteristics and mechanism of a two-zone failure mode of the overburden ...
