Thermophysical Properties of the Desulphurization Slags With Various CaS and CaO/Al2O3 Ratio

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
This article investigates how CaS content and the CaO/Al2O3 ratio influence the thermophysical properties of desulphurization slags. Using experimental measurements and thermodynamic simulations, this study reveals complex effects on viscosity, surface tension, and density, providing new insight into slag structure and phase behavior under ...

Efficient electronic structure calculation for molecular ionization dynamics at high x-ray intensity

open access: yes, 2015
We present the implementation of an electronic-structure approach dedicated to ionization dynamics of molecules interacting with x-ray free-electron laser (XFEL) pulses.

Removing Oxide Layers and Retaining Oxide‐Free Steel Surfaces by Polishing in Oxygen‐Free Atmosphere

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
In this study, the efficacy of wet mechanical polishing under an oxygen‐free atmosphere for deoxidation and the retention of an oxide‐free steel surface are elucidated using X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The methodology proved successful; however, the results were highly dependent on the preparation of the solvents used to clean the samples after ...

On the Possibility of Medium-Energy Compact X-ray Free-Electron Laser

open access: yes, 2012
The problem of X-ray Free-Electron Laser operating on self-amplified spontaneous emission in irregular microundulator is considered. The case when the spectrum width of spontaneous radiation is conditioned by the spatial distribution of sources creating ...

Fully Coherent X-ray Pulses from a Regenerative Amplifier Free Electron Laser

open access: yes, 2006
We propose and analyze a novel regenerative amplifier free electron laser (FEL) to produce fully coherent x-ray pulses. The method makes use of narrow-bandwidth Bragg crystals to form an x-ray feedback loop around a relatively short undulator.

Assessing Altered Coating Adhesion on Plasma‐Deoxidized Surfaces Under Oxygen‐Free Conditions

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
This study demonstrates the effectiveness of atmospheric pressure plasma pretreatment in modifying silicon and stainless steel surfaces to improve adhesion. Argon‐hydrogen plasma increases surface roughness and improves adhesion strength, whereas pure argon results in smoother surfaces and structural changes.

Probing laser-driven surface and subsurface dynamics via grazing-incidence XFEL scattering and diffraction

open access: yesIUCrJ
We demonstrate a grazing-incidence X-ray platform that simultaneously records time-resolved grazing-incidence small-angle X-ray scattering (GISAXS) and grazing-incidence X-ray diffraction (GID) from a femtosecond-laser-irradiated gold film above the ...

Soft X-ray seeding studies for the SLAC Linac Coherent Light Source II [PDF]

open access: yes, 2019
We present the results from studies of soft X-ray seeding options for the LCLS-II X-ray free electron laser (FEL) at SLAC. The LCLS-II will use superconducting accelerator technology to produce X-ray pulses at up to 1 MHz repetition rate using 4 GeV ...

Raman Spectroscopic Identification of Oxide Phases in a Corroded MgO–Steel Composite Anode Used in Aluminum Molten Salt Electrolysis

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Micro‐Raman spectroscopy is applied to characterize corrosion products in a recycled‐based MgO–316L steel composite anode after molten salt electrolysis. A depth‐dependent Fe–O/Fe–Al–O layer sequence of magnetite, hercynite, and an Al‐doped magnetite transition zone is identified.
