Calibration of thickness-dependent k-factors for germanium X-ray lines to improve energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy of SiGe layers in analytical transmission electron microscopy [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
We show that the accuracy of energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy can be improved by analysing and comparing multiple lines from the same element. For each line, an effective k-factor can be defined that varies as a function of the intensity ratio of ...

X-Ray Spectroscopy via Temporal Decomposition

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal
We present a novel way to fit solar flare X-ray spectra that offers more sensitivity to physical flare parameters than traditional approaches to spectroscopy for certain types of flares. We decouple physically distinct emission types in solar flare X-ray

Evolutionarily divergent DUF4465 domains have a common vitamin B12‐binding function

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
We show that DUF4465 family proteins, widespread across bacteria from gut microbiomes, hydrothermal vents, and soil, share a common vitamin B12‐binding function. These augmented β‐jellyroll proteins bind vitamin B12 via extended loops. Our findings establish sequence‐diverse DUF4465 proteins as a widespread class of B12‐binding proteins, highlighting ...

Structural characterization of hydrogen peroxide‐oxidized anthracites by X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and Raman spectra

open access: yes, 2014
The structural characteristics of raw coal and hydrogen peroxide (H2O2)-oxidized coals were investigated using scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction (XRD), Raman spectra, and Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy. The results indicate

UiO‐66 metal–organic frameworks in biomedicine: From structural tunability to bioimaging, photodiagnostics, and photodynamic cancer therapy

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
UiO‐66(Zr) metal–organic frameworks are chemically stable, biocompatible, and highly tunable nanomaterials. Their modular structure enables controlled drug delivery, multimodal bioimaging, and light‐activated photodynamic therapy, supporting integrated diagnostic and therapeutic (theranostic) applications in cancer and biomedical research.

Streaking and splashing: design of a grazing incidence x-ray streak camera and time-resolved measurements of the structure of water [PDF]

open access: yes, 2006
The performance of cesium iodide photocathodes has been characterized for use with grazing incidence soft x-rays. The total electron yield and pulsed quantum efficiency has been measured in a reflection geometry as a function of photon energy (100 eV to ...

Monitoring real time polymorphic transformation of sulfanilamide by diffuse reflectance visible spectroscopy [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
This study investigated the development of a novel approach to surface characterisation of drug polymorphism and the extension of the capabilities of this method to perform ‘real time’ in situ measurements.

Hyperactive ice‐binding proteins stabilize cell membranes and improve resistance to dehydration stress in Caenorhabditis elegans

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
TisIBP8, a fungal‐derived hyperactive ice‐binding protein, helps Caenorhabditis elegans survive dehydration. It localizes near cell membranes, reduces cell damage, and helps maintain membrane structure during drying. These results suggest that ice‐binding proteins can protect cells from dehydration stress as well as freezing stress.
