Activity and rotation of the X-ray emitting Kepler stars [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
The relation between magnetic activity and rotation periods in late-type stars provides fundamental information on the stellar dynamo and spin evolution.

Synchrotron Break Frequencies of Mildly to Highly Relativistic Outflows Observed Off-axis

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal
We consider the synchrotron spectrum produced by mildly to highly relativistic collisionless shocks. Simple analytic formulae are derived for the break frequencies (peak frequency, self-absorption frequency, synchrotron, and inverse Compton cooling ...

Uniform Amorphization of Crystalline Silicon Surfaces Enabled by Deep Ultraviolet Femtosecond Laser Pulses

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Deep‐UV (258 nm) femtosecond pulses enable uniform amorphous silicon writing on Si(100)/(111) with a six‐fold larger fluence amorphization window than NIR methods. Optimized fluence and overlap yield 20–45 nm uniform and continuous amorphous layers. Microscopy shows sharp interfaces, and real‐time reflectivity reveals nanosecond melt–resolidification ...

An X-ray shadowgraph to locate transient high-energy celestial sources [PDF]

open access: yes, 1975
A new technique has been developed to locate strong, transient X-ray sources such as the recently discovered gamma ray bursts. The instrument, termed a shadowgraph, locates sources by detecting the X-ray shadow cast by a large occulting mask pattern on ...

Millinovae: a new class of transient supersoft X-ray sources without a classical nova eruption [PDF]

open access: yes
Some accreting binary systems containing a white dwarf (such as classical novae or persistent supersoft sources) are seen to emit low-energy X-rays with temperatures of ∼ 106 K and luminosities exceeding 1035 erg s−1.

EP240414a: A Gamma-Ray Burst Jet Weakened by an Extended Circumstellar Material

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal Letters
The recent Einstein Probe (EP) event EP240414a exhibits several unusual observational features. Its prompt and afterglow emissions place it between long gamma-ray bursts (LGRBs) and low-luminosity GRBs (LLGRBs).

Superlubricity and Corrosion Inhibition Properties of Solvate Ionic Liquids in Hybrid Carbon Fiber Reinforced Plastic–Steel Interfaces

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Solvate ionic liquids lubrication reduced the coefficient of friction by ∼60% compared to dry sliding, reaching steady‐state values as low as 0.04–0.05. Corrosion weight‐loss measurements in 1 M HCl further demonstrated significant inhibition behavior, with only 100 ppm of [Li(G3)][TFSI] (∼68.5 μL/L) reducing corrosion‐product weight loss by 63 ...

High-resolution spectral analysis of transient pulsars in the Small Magellanic Cloud [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
At low energies the spectra of several X-ray binary pulsars show a significant excess over the main power-law component. Although various physical processes (both thermal and non-thermal) have been invoked to produce this excess, its origin is still ...

Search for the Optical Counterpart of Einstein Probe–discovered Fast X-Ray Transients from the Lulin Observatory

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal Supplement Series
The launch of the Einstein probe (EP) mission has revolutionized the detection and follow-up observations of fast X-ray transients (FXTs) by providing prompt and timely access to their precise localizations.

All‐in‐One Analog AI Hardware: On‐Chip Training and Inference with Conductive‐Metal‐Oxide/HfOx ReRAM Devices

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
An all‐in‐one analog AI accelerator is presented, enabling on‐chip training, weight retention, and long‐term inference acceleration. It leverages a BEOL‐integrated CMO/HfOx ReRAM array with low‐voltage operation (<1.5 V), multi‐bit capability over 32 states, low programming noise (10 nS), and near‐ideal weight transfer.
