Echoes in X-ray binaries [PDF]

open access: yesMonthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society, 2002
We present a method of analysing the correlated X-ray and optical/UV variability in X-ray binaries, using the observed time delays between the X-ray driving lightcurves and their reprocessed optical echoes. This allows us to determine the distribution of reprocessing sites within the binary.

X-Ray Binaries [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
This chapter discusses the implications of X-ray binaries on our knowledge of Type Ibc and Type II supernovae. X-ray binaries contain accreting neutron stars and stellar--mass black holes which are the end points of massive star evolution. Studying these remnants thus provides clues to understanding the evolutionary processes that lead to their ...

Generation of X-Ray Fluctuations in X-Ray Binaries [PDF]

open access: yesInternational Astronomical Union Colloquium, 1996
AbstractShort-term aperiodic fluctuations with 1/f-like power spectral density (PSD), where f is the frequency, are characteristics of X-ray radiation from X-ray binaries. To investigate a mechanism creating fluctuations, we construct a cellular-automaton model for accretion disks based on the concept of self organized criticality (SOC). In this model,

X-RAY POLARIZATION FROM HIGH-MASS X-RAY BINARIES [PDF]

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal, 2015
X-ray astronomy allows study of objects which may be associated with compact objects, i.e. neutron stars or black holes, and also may contain strong magnetic fields. Such objects are categorically non-spherical, and likely non-circular when projected on the sky.

X-Ray Binaries in External Galaxies

open access: yes, 2023
X-ray appearance of normal galaxies is mainly determined by X-ray binaries powered by accretion onto a neutron star or a stellar mass black hole. Their populations scale with the star-formation rate and stellar mass of the host galaxy and their X-ray luminosity distributions show a significant split between star-forming and passive galaxies, both facts

Compact Binary X-Ray Sources [PDF]

open access: yesInternational Astronomical Union Colloquium, 1986
AbstractCompact binary X-ray sources include white dwarfs, neutron stars, and black holes that are accreting matter from a companion star. The X-ray emission from these systems is produced by the accreting matter as it flows through an accretion disk and strikes the surface of the compact object.
