Is an Apple an Orange? A Large Language Model Benchmark for Candidate Term Extraction and Subclass Decisions Against Upper Ontologies in Engineering and Materials Science

Building machine‐readable vocabularies for materials science is slow, expert‐driven work. This study benchmarks 13 large language models on two of its first steps: finding candidate terms in engineering articles and deciding where they belong in a class hierarchy.

Infrared spectroscopy of Be/X-ray binaries [PDF]

We present infrared spectra of 4 Be/X-ray binaries in the K band, and 4 spectra in the J, H and K bands of 2 more sources. The HI IR emission lines are useful determinators of the conditions in the inner regions of the circumstellar disk about the Be star, due to optical depth effects.

Symbolic Regression and Multi‐Objective Optimization of the Flory–Huggins Interaction Parameter for Hydrogels

We develop a data‐driven method to derive the mathematical expressions of the Flory–Huggins interaction parameter χ for the swelling behavior of temperature–responsive hydrogels. Starting from initial assumptions of χ, our workflow combines Bayesian optimization, Flory–Rehner theory, and symbolic regression to generate candidate χ expressions.

Microstructure Evolution of a VMnFeCoNi High‐Entropy Alloy After Synthesis, Swaging, and Annealing

The synthesis and processing (rotary swaging and annealing) of the novel VMnFeCoNi alloy is investigated, alongside the estimation of the grain size effect on hardness. Analysis of a wide grain size range of recrystallized microstructures (12–210 µm) reveals a low annealing twin density.

The Evolutionary History of Be/X-RAY Binaries [PDF]

A 2.5 M⊙helium star remnant of a Case B mass transfer is evolved to off-centre neon ignition and a second mass transfer phase, Case BB, is explored. The model for the formation of Be/X-ray binaries by mass-transfer dominated evolution in an intermediate mass binary is confirmed.

Spectral Transitions in X-Ray Binaries [PDF]

We systematically analyzed about a terabyte of data from Galactic binary systems to characterize how these spectra change as a function of mass accretion rate. With this volume of data we are able to identify the differences in behaviour of black holes and neutron stars, implying that black holes really do have an event horizon.
