Search for High-energy Neutrino Emission from Galactic X-Ray Binaries with IceCube [PDF]
We present the first comprehensive search for high-energy neutrino emission from high- and low-mass X-ray binaries conducted by IceCube. Galactic X-ray binaries are long-standing candidates for the source of Galactic hadronic cosmic rays and neutrinos ...

Generation of X-Ray Fluctuations in X-Ray Binaries [PDF]
AbstractShort-term aperiodic fluctuations with 1/f-like power spectral density (PSD), where f is the frequency, are characteristics of X-ray radiation from X-ray binaries. To investigate a mechanism creating fluctuations, we construct a cellular-automaton model for accretion disks based on the concept of self organized criticality (SOC). In this model,

A global study of X-ray binaries [PDF]
We present preliminary results on a global study of X-ray binaries using 14 Ms of data from the Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer satellite. Our initial study on GX 339-4 is recapped as an introduction to the methods used. We use a consistent analysis scheme for all objects, with three different spectral models to fit the powerlaw and disc components.

This chapter discusses the implications of X-ray binaries on our knowledge of Type Ibc and Type II supernovae. X-ray binaries contain accreting neutron stars and stellar--mass black holes which are the end points of massive star evolution. Studying these remnants thus provides clues to understanding the evolutionary processes that lead to their ...

X-Ray Binaries in External Galaxies
X-ray appearance of normal galaxies is mainly determined by X-ray binaries powered by accretion onto a neutron star or a stellar mass black hole. Their populations scale with the star-formation rate and stellar mass of the host galaxy and their X-ray luminosity distributions show a significant split between star-forming and passive galaxies, both facts

The attenuation of atmospheric Cerenkov photons [PDF]
Whilst the atmosphere places a limit on the successful applications of many branches of astronomy, it becomes an invaluable tool for the detection of very high energy γ-rays. This thesis is concerned with reducing the systematic uncertainties inherent to

High time resolution optical/X-ray cross-correlations for X-ray binaries : anticorrelations and rapid variability [PDF]
Using simultaneous observations in X-rays and optical, we have performed a homogeneous analysis of the cross-correlation behaviours of four X-ray binaries: SWIFT J1753.5-0127, GX339-4, Sco X-1 and CygX-2.
