Comparison of Exclusive Double Poling to Classic Techniques of Cross-country Skiing

open access: yesMedicine & Science in Sports & Exercise, 2018
Introduction This study aimed to 1) determine basic physiological demands during a simulated on-snow cross-country skiing (XCS) race when using grip-waxed skis (all classic XCS techniques [CLASSIC]), versus glide-waxed skis for exclusive double poling ...

Sarcopenic Obesity in Children: An Emerging Complication Evidenced by Clinical Data and a Juvenile Mouse Model

open access: yesJournal of Cachexia, Sarcopenia and Muscle, Volume 17, Issue 2, April 2026.
ABSTRACT Background Sarcopenic obesity (SO) is well‐characterized in older adults, but its impact on muscle development in children remains poorly understood. This study investigated the effects of childhood obesity on musculoskeletal health and the underlying mechanisms.

Compound Dry–Hot Conditions in South and Southeast Asia Modulated by the Arctic Stratospheric Polar Vortex

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters, Volume 52, Issue 23, 16 December 2025.
Abstract Compound dry–hot conditions increasingly threaten South and Southeast Asia, highlighting the need to understand drivers. Observations and numerical simulations reveal a robust polar–low‐latitude teleconnection: the March Arctic stratospheric polar vortex (ASPV) strongly modulates March–April compound dry–hot conditions across the region.

Meta‐analysis of high‐intensity interval training and alternative modalities for enhancing aerobic and anaerobic endurance in young athletes

open access: yesPhysiological Reports, Volume 13, Issue 19, October 2025.
Abstract This meta‐analysis examined whether HIIT outperforms low‐intensity endurance training (LIET), generic training (GT), or sport‐specific drills (SSD) in improving aerobic and anaerobic endurance in youth athletes. Systematic searches of PubMed, MEDLINE, SPORTDiscus, and Web of Science identified studies comparing HIIT with LIET, GT, or SSD in ...

Development of a Framework for the Investigation of Speed, Power, and Kinematic Patterns in Para Cross-Country Sit-Skiing: A Case Study of an LW12 Athlete

open access: yesFront. Sports Act. Living, 2019
Objective: To develop a framework for the investigation of speed, power, and kinematic patterns across varying terrain in cross-country (XC) sit-skiing, and to test this framework in a XC sit-skier of the LW12 class during high- (HIT) and low-intensity ...

The Effect of Automated Verbal Commands During Avalanche Transceiver Search on Acute Mental Stress and Arousal—A Mixed‐Methods Crossover Field Study

open access: yesBrain and Behavior, Volume 15, Issue 7, July 2025.
Avalanche search results in an increase in mental stress with longer coarse search times. VOICE navigation may be an interesting option for companion avalanche rescue since it helps to reduce mental stress and arousal, thereby leading to shorter search times.

Block vs. Traditional Periodization of HIT: Two Different Paths to Success for the World’s Best Cross-Country Skier

open access: yesFrontiers in Physiology, 2019
In short-term studies, block periodization of high-intensity training (HIT) has been shown to be an effective strategy that enhances performance and related physiological factors. However, long-term studies and detailed investigations of macro, meso, and
