Accelerated aging of XLPE cable insulation

Conference on Electrical Insulation & Dielectric Phenomena - Annual Report 1983, 1983
The latest results of a continuing study into the deter ioration of cross-linked polyethylene (XLPE) insulation subjected to electric stress in the presence of water are described. Earlier results have shown that the breakdown strength of electrically aged XLPE was dependent on the amount of moisture in the insulation [1].

Effect of defects and moisture on insulation characteristics of XLPE insulated cable

Electrical Engineering in Japan, 1994
AbstractSample cables having a few types of defects (such as voids, contaminants, and protrusions) with more volume than usual, were prepared intentionally to clarify how these defects affect separately insulation characteristics under the presence/nonpresence of moisture.

Long Term Behavior of XLPE Insulated Cable Models

IEEE Power Engineering Review, 1987
A test cycle with electrical, thermal and combined stresses has been performed on models of XLPE insulated: cables in order to characterize this type of cable from the viewpoint of endurance to combined stresses. For this purpose the method of Combined Analysis of experimental data has been used, thus permitting the goal to be reached in less than two ...

Insulation Properties of 250 KV DC XLPE Cables

IEEE Transactions on Power Apparatus and Systems, 1981
The difficulty of obtaining the electric power generation sites close to the city forces us to install long transmission lines and to adopt dc transmission. During the execution of the Hokkaido-Honshu dc submarine cable project, 250 kV class XLPE dc cable was developed in parallel with self-contained oil-filled cables.

Effect of water on the performance of XLPE insulation

Proceedings of the 3rd International Conference on Conduction and Breakdown in Solid Dielectrics, 2003
Water-tree counting measurements, water and impurity content measurements, and AC breakdown tests were performed on several field-aged medium-voltage extruded cables. The results indicate that the water-tree density increases with the insulation contamination level, particularly for aluminium, sodium, and potassium contaminant.

Factors influencing electrical treeing in XLPE insulation

European Transactions on Electrical Power, 2006
This paper reviews the factors that influence the electrical stress required for initiation of electrical trees in crosslinked polyethylene (XLPE) insulation. Mathematical model relating the average tree inception stress with the defect tip radius of curvature has been provided for AC and impulse voltages.

Breakdown mechanisms of XLPE cable with insulation defects

2020 IEEE Conference on Electrical Insulation and Dielectric Phenomena (CEIDP), 2020
Defects in Cross-Link Polyethylene (XLPE) insulation accelerates the insulation ageing. This is mainly caused by the high amount of discharges caused by the defects. Voids enclosed in the XLPE insulation are one such type of defects. This study compares the possible breakdown mechanisms of two XLPE samples with protrusions created by a needle electrode.

Influence of defects on insulating properties of XLPE cable

[1991] Proceedings of the 3rd International Conference on Properties and Applications of Dielectric Materials, 2002
The influence of defects on the insulating properties of XLPE (cross-linked polyethylene) cables was studied using XLPE cables containing artificial defects. It was confirmed that the AC breakdown strength of the cables decreases with the increase of void size, while the existence of voids does not have any effect on impulse breakdown strength.

Diagnosis of electrical treeing phenomenon in XLPE insulation

Proceedings Electrical Insulation Conference and Electrical Manufacturing Expo, 2005., 2006
Electrical tree formed in XLPE insulation sliced from 220 kV rated cable was diagnosed by partial discharge and dielectrometry measurements and optical observation. The effects of aging by rate of rise in electrical stress and time are reported. Observed intermittent light emission and tree paths supported the theory of emission of protons due to high ...

Study on water treeing retardant XLPE insulations

[1991] Proceedings of the 3rd International Conference on Properties and Applications of Dielectric Materials, 2002
Water-tree-retardant XLPE was evaluated using two types of polyethylene: a polymer-blend XLPE containing blends of ethylene copolymer having a polar group, and VLDPE (very low density polyethylene), which is a novel grade of polyethylene. While the polymer blend XLPE permitted cable extrusion under the same conditions as in the case of conventional ...
