The influence of the yaw angle on the VIV fatigue damage of a yawed cylinder with or without helical strakes

Applied Ocean Research, 2020
Abstract The structural fatigue damage caused by vortex-induced vibration (VIV) is one of the most important failure reasons for flexible cylinders in offshore engineering applications. Helical strakes are often employed to reduce the VIV of slender marine structures. Based on a previous experimental investigation, this paper further investigates the

A Fuzzy System to Determine the Vehicle Yaw Angle

SAE Technical Paper Series, 2004
<div class="htmlview paragraph">The reproduction of the vehicle motion is a crucial element of accident reconstruction. Apart from the position of the center of gravity in an inertial coordinate system, the vehicle heading plays an important role.

Effect of the yaw angle on the riblet performance

Physics of Fluids
Direct numerical simulations are performed to investigate the effect of the yaw angle (α) on the drag-reduction performance by riblets in a turbulent channel flow. The yaw angles of α=0° and 90° correspond to the riblets parallel and perpendicular to the free-stream direction, respectively.

The effect of yaw angle on VIV suppression for an inclined flexible cylinder fitted with helical strakes

open access: yesApplied Ocean Research, 2017
\ua9 2017 Elsevier Ltd Experimental studies were carried out to investigate the response features of an inclined flexible bare cylinder as well as a straked cylinder in a towing tank, with the main purpose of further improving the understanding of the ...

Laboratory measurements of vortex-induced vibrations of a yawed flexible cylinder at different yaw angles

Ocean Engineering, 2018
Abstract Laboratory tests were carried out to characterize the multi-mode vortex-induced vibrations (VIV) of a yawed flexible cylinder in a uniform flow. Five yaw angles in relation to the direction orthogonal to the oncoming flow were adopted, i.e. a = 0°, 15°, 30°, 45° and 60° in this paper.

Measurements of Flow Around an Escort Tug Model with a Yaw Angle

Marine Technology and SNAME News, 2009
This paper presents the results of experiments to measure flow velocities around the hull of an escort tug model operating at a yaw angle of 45 deg using particle image velocimetry (PIV). The paper describes the setup, calibration, and operation of the PIV system and the analysis of the results, including an estimate of the experimental uncertainty ...

A Feasibility Study of Wind Farm Yaw Angle Optimization

Volume 6: Energy, 2019
Abstract Wind farm energy production optimization has received significant attention in recent years. Much of this effort had been focused on optimizing positions of wind turbines within a wind farm domain during the design and planning stage. Optimization of wind turbine positions can reduce wake interactions of upstream turbines.

Yaw damping of elliptic bodies at high angles of attack

Journal of Aircraft, 1990
The instrumentation layout (see Fig. 1) shows the coordinates; Sta is the area on wing from station y = 180 in. to tip. The variation in SZ and MX with Mach number are shown in Figs. 2 and 3, respectively. Notice that the computed terms SZ and MX do not directly reflect the influence of drag force on the wing; however, the inclusion of drag terms in ...

Estimation of Vehicle Side Slip Angle and Yaw Rate

SAE Technical Paper Series, 2000
<div class="section abstract"><div class="htmlview paragraph">An algorithm for estimation of vehicle yaw rate and side slip angle using steering wheel angle, wheel speed, and lateral acceleration sensors is proposed. It is intended for application in vehicle stability enhancement systems, which use controlled brakes or steering.
