Cathepsin F is a unique papain cysteine proteinase with highly conserved structures: catalytic triad and a cystatin domain contained in the elongated N-terminal pro-region. It has been reported that cathepsin F is associated with the establishment of innate immune in several vertebrate including fish in aquaculture, but not known in bivalves.

Carotenoids are powerful antioxidants that affect many physiological functions. As an important source of natural carotenoids, marine mollusks contain various types of carotenoids and are receiving increasing research attention. To better understand the molecular mechanism underlying carotenoid accumulation in marine mollusks, a new variety of ...

Isolation and characterization of melanin pigment from yesso scallop Patinopecten yessoensis
Journal of Ocean University of China, 2017Melanin is one of the essential compounds in the pigments of molluscan shells. However, the effects of melanin on color variations in molluscs are largely unknown. Our previous study suggests that Yesso scallop Patinopecten yessoensis might contain melanin pigment in the dark brown shell.

Estrogen receptors (ERs) were known as estrogen-activated transcription factors and function as major reproduction regulators in vertebrates. The presence of er genes had been reported in Molluscan cephalopods and gastropods. However, they were considered as constitutive activators with unknown biological functions since reporter assays for these ERs ...

Phosphorylation properties of twitchin from Yesso scallop catch and striated muscles
Fisheries Science, 2015Molluscan smooth muscle exhibits a unique muscle contraction, called catch, where the tension is maintained for long periods with little energy consumption. Catch contraction is regulated by twitchin, also called mini-titin, a member of the titin/connectin family. Twitchin is also found in molluscan non-catch striated muscle. We isolated twitchins from

Water temperature fluctuations are considered to be a major factor affecting the immune functions and metabolic processes of scallops. To better understand the immune defense mechanisms of Yesso scallop, Patinopecten yessoensis following exposure to water temperature fluctuations, transcriptomic profiles in the gills from high-frequency fluctuations ...

The striated and smooth adductor muscle tropomyosins (TMs) of Yesso scallop Mizuhopecten yessoensis have been known to express different isoforms, but have not been characterized in detail to date. In the present study, TMs from both muscles of Yesso scallop were purified and their stabilities were compared by circular dichroism (CD) spectrometry and ...

Paralytic shellfish toxins (PSTs) are a group of natural toxic substances often found in marine bivalves. Accumulation, anatomical distribution, biotransformation and depuration of PSTs in different tissues of bivalves, however, are still not very well understood. In this study, we investigated biokinetics and biotransformation of PSTs in six different

There is yet no firm experimental evidence that the evolutionary ancient gonadotropin-releasing hormone GnRH (i.e., GnRH1) also acts in invertebrate gametogenesis. The objective of this paper is to characterize candidate invGnRH peptides of Yesso scallop Patinopecten yessoensis (i.e., peptide identification, immunohistochemical localization, and ...

The neuropeptide control of bivalve reproduction with particular reference to gonadotropin-releasing hormone (invGnRH) is a frontier yet to be investigated. Bivalves are unique because they have two forms of the invGnRH peptide; however, there has been no functional characterization of the peptide-receptor pair.
