Tau acetylation at K331 has limited impact on tau pathology in vivo

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We mapped tau post‐translational modifications in humanized MAPT knock‐in mice and in amyloid‐bearing double knock‐in mice. Acetylation within the repeat domain, particularly around K331, showed modest increases under amyloid pathology. To test functional relevance, we generated MAPTK331Q knock‐in mice.

Soil crusting in Western Samoa. Part I - Some examples of crusting and methods of control [PDF]

open access: yes, 1971
The problems and effects of soil crusting in Western Samoa are discussed. Illustrations of typical crust features include the glazed or 'frosted' surface of certain crusts, and dispersion mosaics.

Calpain small subunit homodimerization is robust and calcium‐independent

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Calpains dimerize via penta‐EF‐hand (PEF) domains. Using single‐molecule force spectroscopy, we measured the strength and kinetics of PEF–PEF homodimer binding. The interaction is robust, shows a transient conformational step before dissociation, and remains largely insensitive to Ca2+.

Preparation and Characteristics of Biomass Char

open access: yesBioResources, 2015
Rice husk and sawdust were selected as the raw materials for a study of biomass char yield in the range of 600 to 900 °C. It was found that temperature was the primary factor affecting the biomass char yield.

Viscous Effect on Surface Waves Generated by Steady Disturbances [PDF]

open access: yes, 1958
A linearized theory is applied here to investigate the viscous effect on water waves generated and maintained by a system of external disturbances which is distributed over the free surface of an otherwise uniform flow.

Structural insights into an engineered feruloyl esterase with improved MHET degrading properties

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
A feruloyl esterase was engineered to mimic key features of MHETase, enhancing the degradation of PET oligomers. Structural and computational analysis reveal how a point mutation stabilizes the active site and reshapes the binding cleft, expading substrate scope.

A methionine‐lined active site governs carbocation stabilization and product specificity in a bacterial terpene synthase

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
This study reveals a unique active site enriched in methionine residues and demonstrates that these residues play a critical role by stabilizing carbocation intermediates through novel sulfur–cation interactions. Structure‐guided mutagenesis further revealed variants with significantly altered product profiles, enhancing pseudopterosin formation. These

Diversity and complexity in neural organoids

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Neural organoid research aims to expand genetic diversity on one side and increase tissue complexity on the other. Chimeroids integrate multiple donor genomes within single organoids. Self‐organising multi‐identity organoids, exogenous cell seeding, or enforced assembly of region‐specific organoids contribute to tissue complexity.

Depth-Dependent Three-Layer Model for the Surface Second-Harmonic Generation Yield

open access: yesFrontiers in Materials, 2017
We present a generalization of the three-layer model to calculate the surface second-harmonic generation (SSGH) yield, which includes the depth dependence of the surface non-linear second-order susceptibility tensor χ(−2ω; ω, ω).
