Identification of Pressure‐Swing Separation Processes for Azeotropic Mixtures Using Deep Reinforcement Learning

open access: yesChemie Ingenieur Technik, Volume 97, Issue 11-12, Page 1094-1102, November 2025.
An autonomous agent trained via reinforcement learning extends flowsheet synthesis capabilities by incorporating distillation columns operating at different pressures. This enables the detection of pressure‐swing strategies, among other efficient separation processes, for a diverse set of azeotropic mixtures.

Efficient heat integration within discretely heat integrated distillation columns using liquid injection

open access: yesAIChE Journal, Volume 71, Issue 8, August 2025.
Abstract Electrification of distillation processes through discretely heat integrated distillation columns (D‐HIDiC) is an effective approach to enhance energy efficiency and lower carbon emissions. For separating systems with high temperature lift, multi‐stage compression and inter‐stage cooling are necessary to link the high‐pressure rectifier and ...

SYNTHESIS OF THE THERMALLY COUPLED DISTILLATION SEQUENCES

open access: yesТонкие химические технологии, 2017
Approaching a hypothetical thermodynamically reversible process is one of the main directions of energy saving in distillation. In practice, this is achieved by the use of systems with coupled thermal and material flows (STMP).

Synthesis of heat‐integrated thermally coupled nonsharp distillation using self‐adaptive spherical search

open access: yesAIChE Journal, Volume 71, Issue 7, July 2025.
Abstract Although thermally coupled distillation (TCD) exhibits strong energy efficiency, the possibility of utility cost savings remains debatable. TCD designs that do not consider vapor transport can underestimate costs, making section rearrangement crucial to find more operable configurations.

Generalized optimization framework for synthesis of thermally coupled distillation columns

open access: yesAIChE Journal, Volume 71, Issue 6, June 2025.
Abstract In this article, a generalized optimization framework is proposed for the synthesis of thermally coupled distillation systems within an equation‐oriented environment. The proposed framework consists of three components: an efficient superstructure representation, a novel mathematical formulation, and the associated solution algorithm ...

Advanced downstream processing for sustainable ethyl acetate production by fermentation

open access: yesAIChE Journal, Volume 71, Issue 3, March 2025.
Abstract Ethyl acetate is a platform chemical conventionally obtained through fossil fuel routes, but more recently its production by fermentation from carbohydrates has been scaled up to a pilot scale. Yet, the complexity of downstream processing (low product concentrations in liquid broth and in off‐gas, azeotrope formation, and the presence of ...

Design of optimal waste heat recovery system for compressed air energy storage considering various system layouts and working fluid types

open access: yesCase Studies in Thermal Engineering
Compressed Air Energy Storage (CAES) is a long-time electricity storage technology, whereas the low efficiency restricts its popularization. Recycling waste heat from interstage coolers can enhance performance of CAES, and organic Rankine cycle (ORC ...

Hygroscopic cycle for enhanced water efficiency in thermal power plants

open access: yesEnvironmental Progress &Sustainable Energy, Volume 44, Issue 2, March/April 2025.
Abstract This article presents a methodology for calculating the potential for water savings when replacing the Rankine cycle with the hygroscopic cycle in power plants. The savings were analyzed in thermal power plants with different generating units (diesel, gas, steam, and combined cycle), different cooling systems (seawater open cycle, adiabatic ...
