The Zona Pellucida “Receptors”
1997Binding of mammalian sperm to the zona pellucida and the induction of the acrosome reaction are prerequisites for successful oocyte fertilization. In the mouse model, the zona pellucida consists of three sulfated glycoproteins, ZP1, ZP2, and ZP3. Zona pellucida proteins are secreted to form a filamentous zona matrix in which ZP2 and ZP3 complex into co-

Immunogenic potency of the zona pellucida
Experientia, 1982New Zealand white rabbits were immunized with low doses of pig zona pellucida material with the aim of reducing nonspecific antibodies in the antiserum. The antibody levels were assayed by the standard precipitation and immunofluorescence methods. The titers produced were comparable with those obtained using large amounts of zona material.

Functional Morphology of the Zona Pellucida
Anatomia, Histologia, Embryologia, 2001The zona pellucida (ZP) is an extracellular matrix surrounding the oocyte and the early embryo that exerts several important functions during fertilization and early embryonic development. The ZP of most mammalian species is composed of three major glycoproteins that show considerable heterogeneity due to extensive post‐translational modifications ...

Surface properties of the zona pellucida
Journal of Experimental Zoology, 1980AbstractStructural and sperm binding properties of the hamster zona pellucida (ZP) were investigated using the scanning electron microscope (SEM). The internal and external surfaces of the ZP were found to be morphologically dissimilar. The external surface displayed a fenestrated lattice‐like appearance, whereas the internal surface showed a regular ...

ZONA PELLUCIDA DOMAIN PROTEINS
Annual Review of Biochemistry, 2005▪ Abstract Many eukaryotic proteins share a sequence designated as the zona pellucida (ZP) domain. This structural element, present in extracellular proteins from a wide variety of organisms, from nematodes to mammals, consists of ∼260 amino acids with eight conserved cysteine (Cys) residues and is located close to the C terminus of the polypeptide ...

All fish eggs are surrounded by an envelope, called the zona pellucida (ZP), that plays various roles during oogenesis, egg deposition, fertilization, and embryogenesis. The fish egg ZP consists of only a few proteins that are homologs of mammalian ZP proteins ZP1, ZP3, and ZP4. Unlike the situation in mammals, in fishes there are often multiple copies

Viscoelastic Characterization of Mouse Zona Pellucida
IEEE Transactions on Biomedical Engineering, 2013The viscoelastic properties of the zona pellucida (ZP), which is the extracellular coat surrounding an oocyte/embryo, are evaluated in this study. Previous studies demonstrate that ZP mechanical properties change during oocyte maturation, fertilization, and early embryo development, but linear pure elastic models currently being used do not satisfy the

Abstract The zona pellucida is an acellular coat which surrounds the plasma membrane of fully grown mammalian oocytes and which performs a variety of important functions during oogenesis, fertilization, and preimplantation development. In this investigation the proteins of the mouse oocyte's zona pellucida have been identified and characterized by ...

The Mouse Egg's Zona Pellucida
2018All mammalian eggs are surrounded by a highly specialized extracellular matrix (ECM), called the zona pellucida (ZP), that functions before, during, and after fertilization. Unlike somatic cell ECM the mouse ZP is composed of three different proteins, ZP1-3, that are synthesized and secreted by growing oocytes and assembled into long interconnected ...

The multifunctional zona pellucida and mammalian fertilization
Journal of Reproductive Immunology, 2009An early step in mammalian fertilization is species-restricted binding of sperm to the oocyte's zona pellucida (ZP), a thick extracellular coat. Sperm bind to the ZP of unfertilized oocytes, but not to the ZP of fertilized oocytes. Shortly after binding to the unfertilized oocyte ZP, sperm undergo the acrosome reaction (AR).
