Biomimetic Design of Biocompatible Neural Probes for Deep Brain Signal Monitoring and Stimulation: Super Static Interface for Immune Response‐Enhanced Contact

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Ultrathin, flexible neural probes are developed with an innovative, biomimetic design incorporating brain tissue‐compatible materials. The material system employs biomolecule‐based encapsulation agents to mitigate inflammatory responses, as demonstrated through comprehensive in vitro and in vivo studies.

Towards an efficient inverse static model of a Festo actuator made of two antagonist muscles for hybrid control of its position and stiffness [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2021
The Festo air muscle is today one of the most known commercial version of the so-called McKibben pneumatic artificial muscle. A major advantage of handmade McKibben muscles, as well as its commercial versions, lies in the possibility it offers of realizing antagonist muscle actuator on the model of the biceps-triceps system.

Aberrant muscle syndrome: Hypertrophy of the hand and arm due to aberrant muscles with or without hypertrophy of the muscles [PDF]

open access: yesCongenital Anomalies, 2010
ABSTRACTFive patients were reported in our congenital anomaly registry who had six hands in total with muscular hyperplasia, aberrant muscles, ulnar drift of the fingers in the metacarpophalangeal (MP) joints, flexion contractures of the MP joints, and enlargement of the metacarpal spaces.

Biologically‐Inspired Melt Electrowriting for the Generation of Highly Biomimetic Functional Myocardium

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
In this work, melt electrowriting is used to fabricate a 3D printed scaffold design that generates engineered cardiac tissues with in‐plane contraction, mimicking natural myocardium. It is shown that these tissues display advanced maturation and functionality.

An In Situ Curing, Shear‐Responsive Biomaterial Designed for Durable Embolization of Microvasculature

open access: yesAdvanced Healthcare Materials, EarlyView.
NeoCast is a next‐generation, solvent‐free, non‐adhesive liquid embolic designed for indications where deep occlusion is desired (e.g., tumors and chronic subdural hematoma). This novel agent offers ideal embolic properties: injectability, controllability, excellent visibility, and biocompatibility.

Precise Few-shot Fat-free Thigh Muscle Segmentation in T1-weighted MRI [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2023
Precise thigh muscle volumes are crucial to monitor the motor functionality of patients with diseases that may result in various degrees of thigh muscle loss. T1-weighted MRI is the default surrogate to obtain thigh muscle masks due to its contrast between muscle and fat signals.

Role of microRNAs in skeletal muscle hypertrophy [PDF]

open access: yesFrontiers in Physiology, 2014
Skeletal muscle comprises approximately 40% of body weight, and is important for locomotion, as well as for metabolic homeostasis. Adult skeletal muscle mass is maintained by a fine balance between muscle protein synthesis and degradation. In response to cytokines, nutrients, and mechanical stimuli, skeletal muscle mass is increased (hypertrophy ...

Molecular Mechanisms of Skeletal Muscle Hypertrophy

open access: yesJournal of Neuromuscular Diseases, 2021
Skeletal muscle hypertrophy can be induced by hormones and growth factors acting directly as positive regulators of muscle growth or indirectly by neutralizing negative regulators, and by mechanical signals mediating the effect of resistance exercise. Muscle growth during hypertrophy is controlled at the translational level, through the stimulation of ...

An Euler-Bernoulli-Type Beam Model of the Vocal Folds for Describing Curved and Incomplete Glottal Closure Patterns [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2023
Incomplete glottal closure is a laryngeal configuration wherein the glottis is not fully obstructed prior to phonation. In this work, we introduce an Euler-Bernoulli composite beam vocal fold (VF) model that produces qualitatively similar incomplete glottal closure patterns as those observed in experimental and high-fidelity numerical studies, thus ...
