Cerebral micro-dialysis allows continuous sampling of extracellular metabolites, including glucose, lactate and pyruvate. Transient ischemic events cause a rapid drop in glucose and a rise in lactate levels. Following such events, the lactate/pyruvate (L/

Integrated Information as a Metric for Group Interaction: Analyzing Human and Computer Groups Using a Technique Developed to Measure Consciousness [PDF]
Researchers in many disciplines have previously used a variety of mathematical techniques for analyzing group interactions. Here we use a new metric for this purpose, called 'integrated information' or 'phi.' Phi was originally developed by neuroscientists as a measure of consciousness in brains, but it captures, in a single mathematical quantity, two ...

Reconstruction-classification method for quantitative photoacoustic tomography [PDF]
We propose a combined reconstruction-classification method for simultaneously recovering absorption and scattering in turbid media from images of absorbed optical energy. This method exploits knowledge that optical parameters are determined by a limited number of classes to iteratively improve their estimate.

The Ultra-High-Energy Source MGRO J1908+06 [PDF]
The TeV gamma-ray source MGRO J1908+06 is one of the highest-energy sources known, with observed emission by the High Altitude Water Cherenkov (HAWC) Observatory extending well past 100 TeV. The source exhibits both energy-dependent morphology and a spatially-dependent spectral index.

Overcoming the Memory Bottleneck in Auxiliary Field Quantum Monte Carlo Simulations with Interpolative Separable Density Fitting [PDF]
We investigate the use of interpolative separable density fitting (ISDF) as a means to reduce the memory bottleneck in auxiliary field quantum Monte Carlo (AFQMC) simulations of real materials in Gaussian basis sets. We find that ISDF can reduce the memory scaling of AFQMC simulations from $\mathcal{O}(M^4)$ to $\mathcal{O}(M^2)$.

Accelerating Auxiliary-Field Quantum Monte Carlo Simulations of Solids with Graphical Processing Unit [PDF]
We outline how auxiliary-field quantum Monte Carlo (AFQMC) can leverage graphical processing units (GPUs) to accelerate the simulation of solid state sytems. By exploiting conservation of crystal momentum in the one- and two-electron integrals we show how to efficiently formulate the algorithm to best utilize current GPU architectures.

Electrochemical Perspective on Hematite–Malonate Interactions
Organic matter (OM) interactions with minerals are essential in OM preservation against decomposition in the environment. Here, by combining potentiometric and electrophoretic measurements, we probed the mode of coordination and the role of pH-dependent ...

Operator Regularization and Large Noncommutative Chern Simons Theory [PDF]
We examine noncommutative Chern Simons theory using operator regularization. Both the zeta-function and the eta-function are needed to determine one loop effects. The contributions to these functions coming from the two point function is evaluated.

Mesomorphic properties of cyanobiphenyl dimers with a central malonate unit
A series of cyanobiphenyl dimers attached via alkoxy spacers to a central malonate were prepared, and the mesomorphic behaviour was studied by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), polarised optical microscopy and X-ray diffraction (Wide-angle X-ray ...
