Sequence determinants of RNA G‐quadruplex unfolding by Arg‐rich regions

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We show that Arg‐rich peptides selectively unfold RNA G‐quadruplexes, but not RNA stem‐loops or DNA/RNA duplexes. This length‐dependent activity is inhibited by acidic residues and is conserved among SR and SR‐related proteins (SRSF1, SRSF3, SRSF9, U1‐70K, and U2AF1).

Ordovician conodont diversity in the northern Baltic [PDF]

open access: yesEstonian Journal of Earth Sciences, 2012
The diversity data presented in this paper are based on recently revised collections of conodonts from outcrops (northern Estonia) and core sections of Estonia and western and northern Latvia.

The (Glg)ABCs of cyanobacteria: modelling of glycogen synthesis and functional divergence of glycogen synthases in Synechocystis sp. PCC 6803

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We reconstituted Synechocystis glycogen synthesis in vitro from purified enzymes and showed that two GlgA isoenzymes produce glycogen with different architectures: GlgA1 yields denser, highly branched glycogen, whereas GlgA2 synthesizes longer, less‐branched chains.

Lower and Middle Ordovician conodonts from the subsurface of SE Estonia and adjacent Russia [PDF]

open access: yesEstonian Journal of Earth Sciences, 2011
The distribution of conodonts in the Lower–Middle Ordovician beds was studied in five drill core sections of southeastern Estonia. Ten conodont zones and six subzones, from the Paroistodus proteus Zone to the Eoplacognathus lindstroemi Subzone, were ...

EPIC spectral observations of variability in earth’s global reflectance [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
NASA's Earth Polychromatic Imaging Camera (EPIC) onboard NOAA's Deep Space Climate Observatory (DSCOVR) satellite observes the entire sunlit Earth every 65 to 110 min from the Sun-Earth Lagrangian L1 point.

Structural biology of ferritin nanocages

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Ferritin is a conserved iron‐storage protein that sequesters iron as a ferric mineral core within a nanocage, protecting cells from oxidative damage and maintaining iron homeostasis. This review discusses ferritin biology, structure, and function, and highlights recent cryo‐EM studies revealing mechanisms of ferritinophagy, cellular iron uptake, and ...

Tomorrow's Earth [PDF]

open access: yesScience, 2018
Our planet is in a perilous state. The combined effects of climate change, pollution, and loss of biodiversity are putting our health and well-being at risk. Given that human actions are largely responsible for these global problems, humanity must now nudge Earth onto a trajectory toward a more stable, harmonious state.

The road toward a general relativistic metric inside the Earth and its effect on neutrino travel from CERN to GRAN-SASSO Laboratory [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
In a first attempt to describe the effect on neutrino travel inside the Earth caused by general relativity in the case of a dense Earth, we have neglected the Earth's rotation, the Earth's ellipticity and also the surface terrain variation, nevertheless ...
