Associations Between the Built Environment in GPS-Derived Activity Spaces and Sedentary Behavior, Light Physical Activity, and Moderate-to-Vigorous Physical Activity. [PDF]

open access: yesInt J Environ Res Public Health
Built environment and physical activity (PA) studies have predominantly used fixed or home-centric approaches to identify environmental exposures. In this study, GPS-derived daily activity spaces were used to examine the relationships between the built ...

On the theory and applications of stochastic gradient descent in continuous time [PDF]

open access: yes, 2022
Stochastic optimisation problems are ubiquitous across machine learning, engineering, the natural sciences, economics, and operational research. One of the most popular and widely used methods for solving such problems is stochastic gradient descent.

Unveiling Chemical Cues of Insect-Tree and Insect-Insect Interactions for the Eucalyptus Weevil and Its Egg Parasitoid by Multidimensional Gas Chromatographic Methods

open access: yes, 2022
Multidimensional gas chromatography is, presently, an established and powerful analytical tool, due to higher resolving power than the classical 1D chromatographic approaches.

Forecast of power generation and heat production from renewable energy sources

open access: yes, 2017
The share of renewable energy sources (RES) in the end use of energy in the UE will increase from the present level of about 25% to 50 % in 2030 according to the assumptions of the European Commission. In Poland the RES Act was passed in 2015.

A stochastic differential equation SIS epidemic model

open access: yes, 2011
In this paper we extend the classical susceptible-infected-susceptible epidemic model from a deterministic framework to a stochastic one and formulate it as a stochastic differential equation (SDE) for the number of infectious individuals $I(t)$. We then

Consensus Formation and Change are Enhanced by Neutrality

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Neutral agents are shown to enhance both the formation and overturning of consensus in collective decision‐making. A general mathematical model and experiments with locusts and humans reveal that neutrality enables robust consensus via simple interactions and accelerates consensus change by reducing effective population size.

Localizable Fluorescent Metal Ion Indicators With Tunable Colors

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
A modular platform enables the generation of fluorescent metal ion indicators with tunable emission colors and precise subcellular localization. Conjugation to self‐labeling proteins yields bright, color‐tunable potassium probes that permit wash‐free live‐cell imaging, revealing dynamic potassium efflux in stimulated neurons.

Effect of environmental fluctuation in an eco-epidemiological model on the Salton Sea

open access: yes, 2001
Elevated salinity, accelerated eutrophication, blooms of Avian botulism and dramatic water quality fluctuation are the key factors for massive die-offs of Tilapias and pelicans in the Salton Sea.
