Covalent attachment of antagonists to the α7 nicotinic acetylcholine receptor: synthesis and reactivity of substituted maleimides

open access: yes, 2016
The 3-methylmaleimide congeners of the natural product methyllycaconitine (MLA) and an analogue covalently attach to functional cysteine mutants of the α7 nicotinic acetylcholine receptor (nAChR)

Vagus nerve stimulation alleviates alveolar bone loss and inflammation in ligature-induced periodontitis rat model [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Applied Oral Science
Objective Vagus nerve stimulation (VNS) can inhibit inflammation in various diseases by activating the cholinergic anti-inflammatory pathway. However, whether VNS could attenuate periodontitis by activating α7-nicotinic acetylcholine receptor (α7-nAChR)

Increased Binding of [18F]Nifene, a PET Imaging Probe for α4β2* Nicotinic Acetylcholinergic Receptors in Hippocampus–Subiculum of Postmortem Human Parkinson's Disease Brain

open access: yesSynapse, Volume 80, Issue 5, September 2026.
[18F]Nifene, a PET imaging probe for α4β2* nicotinic acetylcholine receptors, was used to discretely measure changes in hippocampus (HP) and subiculum (SUB) of postmortem Parkinson's disease (PD) cases compared to cognitively normal (CN) cases. Significant increased [18F]nifene binding in PD was observed.

Cloning and Expression of Cockroach α7 Nicotinic Acetylcholine Receptor Subunit

open access: yesFrontiers in Physiology, 2020
Understanding insect nicotinic acetylcholine receptor (nAChR) subtypes is of major interest because they are the main target of several insecticides.

Inhibition of kynurenine 3‐monooxygenase (KMO) reduces fentanyl and sucrose intake and relapse‐like behaviour in rats

open access: yesBritish Journal of Pharmacology, Volume 183, Issue 18, Page 5458-5475, September 2026.
Abstract Background and Purpose Opioid use disorder, particularly involving fentanyl, poses major challenges due to high relapse rates and limited effectiveness of pharmacotherapies. The kynurenine pathway has emerged as a target for addiction treatment through its modulation of glutamatergic and dopaminergic neurotransmission.

Hippocampal α7 nicotinic acetylcholine receptor levels in patients with schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, or major depressive disorder

open access: yes, 2011
The α7 nicotinic acetylcholine receptor (nAChR) is involved in cognitive function and synaptic plasticity. Consequently, changes in α7 nAChR function have been implicated in a variety of mental disorders, especially schizophrenia.

Ultrastructural Distribution of the α7 Nicotinic Acetylcholine Receptor Subunit in Rat Hippocampus [PDF]

open access: yes, 2001
Acetylcholine (ACh) is an important neurotransmitter in the mammalian brain; it is implicated in arousal, learning, and other cognitive functions. Recent studies indicate that nicotinic receptors contribute to these cholinergic effects, in addition to ...

Curcumin Derivatives as Allosteric Modulator of α7-nAChR: Functional and Molecular Docking Insights

open access: yesMedical Principles and Practice
Background: Curcumin has emerged as promising candidate for therapeutic modulation of neurodegenerative disorders by acting on α7-nicotinic acetylcholine receptor (α7-nAChR).

Topical Donepezil for Cholinergic Modulation in Chronic Wound Repair

open access: yesWound Repair and Regeneration, Volume 34, Issue 5, September/October 2026.
ABSTRACT Chronic wounds result from combined defects in vascular perfusion, inflammatory resolution, and epithelial repair. The skin's non‐neuronal cholinergic system (NNCS), formed by keratinocytes, endothelial cells, fibroblasts, and immune cells that synthesise and respond to acetylcholine (ACh), helps coordinate these processes through muscarinic ...

The α7 nAChR Agonist PNU-282987 Reduces Inflammation and MPTP-Induced Nigral Dopaminergic Cell Loss in Mice

open access: yesJournal of Parkinson’s Disease, 2013
Background: Parkinson's disease (PD) is associated with neurodegeneration of dopaminergic neurons and an accompanying neuroinflammatory process in the substantia nigra (SN).
