The Arabidopsis thaliana gene annotated by the locus tag At3g08860 encodes alanine aminotransferase

open access: yesPlant Direct, 2019
The aminotransferase gene family in the model plant Arabidopsis thaliana consists of 44 genes, eight of which are suggested to be alanine aminotransferases.

Β-Alanine Supplementation

open access: yes, 2012
β-Alanine is rapidly developing as one of the most popular sport supplements used by strength/power athletes worldwide. The popularity of β-alanine stems from its unique ability to enhance intramuscular buffering capacity and thereby attenuating fatigue.

Reconstructing enzyme evolution by protein engineering

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Natural enzyme evolution can be retraced by protein engineering methods such as directed evolution, rational design, and ancestral sequence reconstruction. These approaches reveal how enzymes emerged from ligand‐binding scaffolds, developed varying substrate preferences, formed oligomeric complexes, adapted to environmental changes, and evolved novel ...

Exercise and β-alanine supplementation on carnosine-acrolein adduct in skeletal muscle

open access: yesRedox Biology, 2018
Previous studies have demonstrated that exercise results in reactive aldehyde production and that β-alanine supplementation increases carnosine content in skeletal muscle.

Structural and biochemical analysis of a B12 superbinder

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
BtuG proteins are vitamin B12 scavengers in Bacteroides thetaiotaomicron, a dominant human gut bacterium. We present crystal structures of three BtuG homologs bound to cobalamin and its precursor cobinamide, revealing picomolar binding affinities, among the highest known for any natural protein.

β-alanine scavenging of free radicals protects mitochondrial function and enhances both insulin secretion and glucose uptake in cells under metabolic stress

open access: yesAdvances in Redox Research, 2022
Type 2 diabetes is a disease characterized by dysregulation of glucose homeostasis, with numerous diabetic complications attributable to the resulting chronic exposure of cells and tissues to elevated concentrations of glucose and fatty acids.

Structures of mycobacterial 3‐methylcrotonyl‐CoA carboxylase reveal carrier‐domain translocation between catalytic sites

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Mycobacterial 3‐methylcrotonyl‐CoA carboxylase uses a mobile biotin‐carrying domain to shuttle a carboxyl group between two catalytic sites, enabling carboxylation of 3‐methylcrotonyl‐CoA during leucine breakdown. Cryo‐electron microscopy captures the carrier at both sites and reveals an inward loop movement that may prevent futile rebinding to the ...

Enzyme-catalyzed amine-functionalization of poly(ethylene-glycol)

open access: yeseXPRESS Polymer Letters, 2022
This paper presents a new method for the amine-functionalization of poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) of Mn =2050 g/mol via Candida antarctica lipase B (CALB)-catalyzed esterification of tert-butyloxycarbonyl (tBOC)-protected β-Alanine and L-Alanine.

Effects of buffering agents on high-intensity exercise performance and capacity [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
High-intensity exercise results in hydrogen ion accumulation, which can have a deleterious effect on muscle function, and thus exercise tolerance. Buffering agents are commonly used to enhance exercise performance and capacity. Two such agents, β-alanine
