Risk of Multidrug Resistant Bacteria Acquisition in Patients with Declared β-Lactam Allergy during Hospitalization in Intensive Care Unit: A Retrospective Cohort Study (2007-2018)

open access: yesJournal of Immunology Research, 2022
Introduction. The risk of extended spectrum β-lactamase (ESBL) bacterial acquisition in patients with β-lactam allergy has been poorly investigated. In a previous study conducted over a 6-year long period (2007-2012), we found that patients with declared

The barrier function of the outer membrane ofPseudomonas maltophiliain the diffusion of saccharides and β-lactam antibiotics [PDF]

open access: yesFEMS Microbiology Letters, 1989
This paper reports that the efficiency of solute diffusion through the outer membrane of Pseudomonas maltophilia is roughly 3 to 5% of that of Escherichia coli. This is despite the fact that the outer membrane pore(s) is only a little smaller than that of E. coli. These results suggest that P. maltophilia has a low copy number of porin(s).

β-lactam antibiotic versus combined β-lactam antibiotics and single daily dosing regimens of aminoglycosides for treating serious infections: A meta-analysis

open access: yes, 2019
Background: Combining aminoglycosides with β-lactam antibiotics for treating serious infections has not been associated with reduced mortality in previous meta-analyses.

β-Lactam induction of ISEcp1B-mediated mobilization of the naturally occurringblaCTX-Mβ-lactamase gene ofKluyvera ascorbata [PDF]

open access: yesFEMS Microbiology Letters, 2008
ISEcp1B is an insertion element associated with the emerging expanded-spectrum beta-lactamase bla(CTX-M) genes in Enterobacteriaceae. Because ISEcp1B-bla(CTX-M)positive strains may be identified from humans and animals, the ability of this insertion sequence to mobilize the bla(CTX-M-2) gene was tested from its progenitor Kluyvera ascorbata to study ...

Imide and isatin derivatives as β-lactam mimics of β-lactam antibiotics

open access: yes, 2002
Activated γ-lactams, which are derivatives of succinimide, phthalimide and isatin with suitable elements of molecular recognition, have been synthesised as mimics of the ß-lactam antibiotics and their chemical and biological reactivity ...

Fluoroquinolones versus β-Lactam/β-Lactamase Inhibitors in Outpatients with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease and Pneumonia: A Nationwide Population-Based Study. [PDF]

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2015
Studies on the association between antibiotic treatment and outcomes in outpatients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and pneumonia are scarce.

Commonly prescribed β-lactam antibiotics induce C. trachomatis persistence/stress in culture at physiologically relevant concentrations [PDF]

open access: yesFrontiers in Cellular and Infection Microbiology, 2014
Chlamydia trachomatis, the most common bacterial sexually transmitted disease agent worldwide, enters a viable, non-dividing and non-infectious state (historically termed persistence and more recently referred to as the chlamydial stress response) when exposed to penicillin G in culture.

A Concise Asymmetric Synthesis of A β-Lactam-Based Cholesterol Absorption Inhibitor

open access: yes, 2016
A concise, four-step, asymmetric synthesis of a β-lactam-based cholesterol absorption inhibitor, Sch 57939, was developed. The discovery of a one-step enantio- and diastereoselective synthesis of a trans-β-lactam provided easy access to the desired ...

Identification of host genetic factors modulating β-lactam resistance in Escherichia coli harbouring plasmid-borne β-lactamase through transposon-sequencing

open access: yesEmerging Microbes and Infections
Since β-lactam antibiotics are widely used, emergence of bacteria with resistance to them poses a significant threat to society. In particular, acquisition of genes encoding β-lactamase, an enzyme that degrades β-lactam antibiotics, has been a major ...
